The OP has a very relevant point. But I'll try to explain.

I have sites that are seasonal, but what I find year in and year out is no matter if it is the peak season when my traffic can double, yet my earnings only go up a bit! Whether it is xx or xxx clicks, the earnings for the day end up the same! This is the default behavior of Adsense, it is called smart pricing, and there is nothing the publisher can do about it.

Smart pricing is meant to benefit the advertiser, NOT the publisher. If I'm an advertiser, I'm urged to get more clicks because Google will charge me less, as the INCENTIVE for me to go get more clicks. It's a DISCOUNT.

Remember that Adsense publishers are the bottom feeders in this ecosystem. It's basically Google's way of making use of our websites to get (squeeze) more revenue. Note that the profits from Adsense for Content form only a small portion of Google's revenue. To say they don't really care about the average Adsense publisher is true, even if that was a big publisher. They can shut you down and find another one to replace you - Anytime.

If you are making good money with Adsense, you can be sure you would make much, much more as an advertiser or seller of something with the traffic you get.

    No mystery there, I hope.
