How strong is the Israel Lobby in the US?

Israeli war-crimes are not even reported in the MSM. We would never know the MSM was so biased, if it was not for the first-hand experience from the the Ron Paul Campaign.

These guys sure found out, when their work was labeled anti-semitic without giving it a second thought. I suggest it be read.

I assume the two year old reply to your two year old article would provide balance.

Debunking the Newest – and Oldest – Jewish Conspiracy:
A Reply to the Mearsheimer-Walt “Working Paper”

    by
    Alan Dershowitz
    Harvard Law School
    Submitted 4/5/06

The working paper by Academic Dean and Professor Stephen Walt and Professor John Mearsheimer presents a conspiratorial view of history in which the Israel Lobby has a stranglehold on American foreign policy, the American media, think tanks and academia. In his response, Professor Alan Dershowitz demonstrates that the paper contains three types of major errors: quotations are wrenched out of context, important facts are misstated or omitted; and embarrassingly weak logic is employed. One of the authors of this paper has acknowledged that none of the evidence represents original documentation or is derived from independent interviews. In light of the papers errors, and its admitted lack of originality, Dershowitz asks why these professors would have chosen to publish a paper that does not meet their usual scholarly standards, especially given the risk that should have been obvious to realists - that recycling these charges under their imprimatur of prominent authors would be featured, as they have been, on extremist websites. Dershowitz questions the authors claims that people who support Israel do not want an open debate on issues involving Israel. He renews his challenge to debate the issues.

If you criticize the Israeli lobby or Israeli policy, you get labeled an antisemite.

I'm sure there is baseless and dishonest criticism. But any conspiracy to encourage silence and discourage investigation, begs attention.

Having personally known one former leader of AIPAC, I can say with experience that it is

    1. not a monolithic group by any stretch of the imagination.
    2. AIPAC, representing the most formal application of any lobby on behalf of Israel, is powerful, it works hard, and meets enormous opposition on a slew of issues. It just continues to work.

    3. There is a long history of examples of differences between Israeli and US disagreement on a slew of issues. Some are published, some are leaked. Regardless of where a variety of members of AIPAC might have stood on the Bush administration's decision to attack Iraq, it has been leaked, relatively early on, that the Israeli administration was against it.

Its not that they weren't totally against US intervention in the middle east, their own resources saw Iraq as weak, ineffectual and not a danger. They did see Iran as a danger.

Painting the Israeli lobby as co-conspirators with the US government is an exageration. There are many overlapping concerns. There is no conspiracy.

Israeli intelligence argues against the thrust of the US intelligence report that claims that Iran has suspended, reduced, or eliminated its effort for nuclear warheads. Bush and Cheney don't believe it. Its hard to argue conspiracy when there is so much disagreement.

In fact its impossible to argue anything with definitiveness when it is virtually impossible for the outside world to get clear facts on issues of this ilk.
