I never really listen to critics since their job is to spark controversy to gain attention. I do think that the internet security needs to be tightened though.
The Internet is highly decentralized. If a link needs to be upgraded, the owner upgrades it. If security of a node needs to be upgraded, the owner upgrades it. It the owners fail to implement the necessary upgrades, they will suffer the consequences. You can't upgrade or secure "the Internet", because there really is no such thing as "the Internet." You can only upgrade and secure individual components owned and operated by individual organizations.
And if anything, the net as a whole will simply slow down. Also, the last time I checked we had a HUGE excess of bandwidth worldwide, as the anylists were projecting more and more people getting on the net using broad band access, but the speed of the increase has tappered (it's still increasing, but rather than an accelerating rate of increase in broad band subscribers it's a decelerating rate of increase).
With the costs of storage etc coming down, and the introduction of new technologies then surely things will just even themselves out in due course?
