I sometime see when a site is for sale they list if it is included in the DMOZ directory or not. How important is it for a website to be listed at DMOZ and why?
I guess when people are trying to sell sites they will attempt to bolster what they have in any way, stating that a site is listed in DMOZ seems less important to me compared to the position of the site in search engines for keyword phrases or if the site was ever penalised, promoted badly or simply not an earner. Its down to the person, people are going to give different replies but for me DMOZ doesn't mean anything.
So basically, having your site listed on DMOZ, is really worthless? Just any other directory...but "famous"?
At one time it was. Now, its debatable as to whether it makes any difference at all. Oddly enough when I read the title of this thread I thought it said "The impotency of..." That might be more appropriate by today's standards.
I would not go as far as to say it is worthless. Listings in DMOZ are regularly listed over and over throughout many directories. google directory for example. Being listed in DMOZ can only benefit a site and certainly can't hurt. What people in general do not like about DMOZ is the complete lack of responsiveness to submitters to their site. Most of the negative comments on DMOZ are coming from those who have submitted their sites and never been accepted or notified of their status in any way. Also there is a DMOZ sub category and we tend to get tired of seeing DMOZ questions in this one. Personally I don't care for DMOZ at all but that is more because of their complete lack of anything resembling service to the people submitting their sites and I don't like all the dead links you can find in DMOZ.
No such thing as a famous website people are famous. Websites are popular or not, if there was any truth to a directory or other type of site being important to be listed in then wouldn't everyone be falling over themselves to get in? actually they do a bit dont they but its a misunderstanding, there must be people out there calling themselves seo's or something and they maybe advise their followers about certain things that they need to do, without explaining why. Having your site listed in google can be worthless, spending 10k on adwords a month can be worthless, think about it that way, theres a lot more to it than whether a single site is good for you or no good at all.
I submited many websites, none of those websites are available on dmoz . From my experience i guess dmoz is not worth it
How many zillion threads are there going to be on this topic? Of course a link in DMOZ is important. Its is silly to suggest otherwise. BUT, its just a good link to have and nothing more. There are plenty of other ways to get good links. Most sites are not listable in DMOZ.
