How important is it to build a list for every website?

I'm trying the Yeast Infection Natural Cure niche and i'm contemplating whether or not to build a list for this site.

    What do you guys think?

Can you explain what you mean by a list?

an email opt-in list created through a third party service like aweber that you host on your website.

I find that it depends on the niche. After the first one thousand offers, webmasters tend to ignore these. You usually have to give them something worthwhile to sign up and a newsletter doesn't cut it.

Lists are your way out of search engine dependency... I would recommend trying to build one... and keep it active through a regular mailing.

It is a great technique for retaining visitors...

Obviously you need content worth coming back for... but that should go without saying.

lists are definitely important. I have worked for a guy that can make like $50k promoting stuff to his list from 3 emails. But it isn't easy and you really have to work at learning to write good autoresponder sequences and broadcast promotions. I like reading the aweber blog.

A mailing list ives you a chance to follow up and build credibility by providing useful information on an ongoing basis. Publishing an email newsletter once a month would be on way to keep in touch. Giving away free reports is another.

The beauty of owning a list is you can sell to it as well and can contact it over and over for years to come.

Hmmm, It seems to me that there is no reason to create a list for a yeast
infection site. I don't think I would want to get constant emails reminding
me about yeast infections. It's something that you want immediate action
for on a one-time basis. I would concentrate on seo, ppc, and other forms
of marketing for people who are looking for immediate relief.

But then again I'm neither a marketing expert or a woman. But I do know that
if somebody was sending me emails about jock itch, I would unsubscribe.

I think I would concentrate on making partnerships with people that have lists
devoted to more general natural cure and alternate health lists and sites. You could
also start your own more general woman's health, natural remidies, or another kind of
more general list if you feel you could come up with enough content. That would be
an excellent platform to sell your yeast infection cure. Plus you could sell other people's
products and when you create more yourself you could promote those.

If you aren't building a list you may as well be working a regular J.O.B.
A list will make you independent of the SE's. I, for one have no intentions of relying solely on SE traffic to give me the income I want. They change their position on things and their algorithims constantly and you will never keep up unless you have a staff devoted to it.

Case in point: A friend I know sells ringtones. He made over $30,000 in a 3 month period and asked me for advice on increasing his income. My first question was "How big is your list?" His reply, "what list?"

Let me ask you, do you think people buy ring tones ONCE!!!!

He could have been making 30k per month if he was building a list. That is how important it is.

There really isn't a niche I can think of where you shouldn't be building a list, unless it's a "How to commit suicide" site or something, I guess they only need your help once.

    :)

Are there any list services which really are free? I don't need anything fancy and would actually prefer to host the thing myself if possible.

My opinion is that it is very important to have the list building as the saying says money is in the list.

I have great experience in the list building and i could earn more with the help of the list.

actually you don't need a aweber account to do this lists,
you can just make a blog and ask your users to sign up there,

    and discuss about your "topic",
just install a plugin that lets you send mails to your users,

i have a plugin installed in my site,
and i give weekly updates to 250++ members~

it's still beats the traditional mailing list,
as they'll know it's from you.

search it up at google, you'll find tons of mailing list providers,
that only give like limited services to FREE customers,

plus they have their AWEFULL banners when they send to your mailing list,
bravenet is for one i know of,

that's why i just installed a plugin to do it. :D

While you're contemplating, woofytalk, contemplate on which would better for you: Showing your info to only the ones who sign up, which will be, maybe, 1% of your visitors, and many of them won't read all of it anyway, or by publishing the info right in your site for ALL to see.
