They will realize that you are a key to their success. As far as how to build a relationship, simply communicate, respect them, pay bills on time, and support their business.

Yes its important. I have been getting my supplier at 30% lower cost than my competitor. I do treat my supplier some money when their company having cash flow difficulties.
