Traffic from whom? Who the hell visits those bidding directories except other bidding directory owners looking at the competition and other webmasters looking at their competition for top spot?

Unlikely. More likely people use a search engine and if they accidentally click on a link to a directory they hit the back button and continue with the next item in the search results.

The only directories I ever use to find anything are very specific niche directories that I know to be reliable in terms of listing only quality sites. General directories and bidding directories? I don't even know anyone who uses them to find information. And yes, that includes DMOZ and the Yahoo Directory.

true but with a bidding directory the link is basically ' in your face' right there on the front page so you can't miss it. wth a general directory you have to do a little digging to fin what you are looking for.

so yes a bidding directory will bring more traffic. Its obvious in my web logs that i have decent traffic comming from bid directories.

And who are those people? Other directory owners checking you out? Other site owners competing for your spot in the bidding directory?

How many of those leads are converted into something you can use?

Hi Minstrel, you are defeating the entire purpose of bidding directories or even web directories. Why do you think that Bidding directories are getting popular ?? & why do u think people are spending $k's to get a top listing if there are not getting conversions.

The traffic is attractive factor here :) from the bidding directories.

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=bi...-t-200&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&vc=&fp_ip=IN

    6,660,000 Results

    http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt...Search&fr=yfp-t-200&fp_ip=IN&rd=r1&meta=vc=in

    6,630,000 Results again...

& If you really think that Bidding directory get links from only Bidding directories(purchases of bids), then please check again.

    Amit ;)

Actually the number of results is irrelevant.

I just checked the Overture keyword tool. Guess what? According to their tool nobody searches "bidding web directory" or "bidding directory"

In my opinion bidding directories are getting popular because people can register a domain, install a script and sell links. I seriously doubt that these directories will retain their popularity very long - except in a few cases where the owner actually implements features to make their site valuable to visitors. In other words they make it more than just a bid for position free for all.

People who click adverts I have, or people from SEs.

Thats what I though, but the pages they land on they do click the links as I track this, and analytics reports a low bounce rate and resonable time on site. May not be the case for other sites but its ok on mine.

Other bidding directory top spots have generated over $1000 in sales for me, which is more then some of these bid directories have ever made.

Its a new phrase, only around a month or so thats why.

exactly, people stay on the site for a long time,
00:03:50 Avg. Time on Site that's enough to get a query, or atleast the visitors are searching them,
you said that the visitors hit right back! 3 minutes is a long time, if they had to just go away:)

I've bidded for a main page position on Zorg and it has been among the top three sources of traffic according to Awstats.

You're not answering my question. WHO are these people you say constitute traffic? And what sort of site gets this traffic? Another directory? Another bidding directory?

I just don't see the evidence that the average surfer even knows directories exist, let alone uses them to find anything.

It's like the Firefox statistics: Look at webmaster forums and other webmaster related sites and you'll see stats indicating that about 50% or more of visitors are using Firefox. Go to an average commercial or informational site and that figure drops to about 10% or so.

I have a very large extended family. If I create a site and get all of them to visit it, I have traffic but so what? Having all your directory buddies or competitors click through to your site from some bidding directory doesn't mean a damn thing.

I was just wondering isn't it possible to have specialty bidding directories.

Say Real Estate Directory which is a bidding directory.

according to my analytics, they are:

    1. everyday ordinary people
    2. advertisers and promoters
    3. web masters

Am I/we suppose to post screenshots to prove something? I mean, what exactly would satisfy your curiosities? What exactly are/is your motive for asking?
I don't know 'WHO" these people are personally, but i know exactly how they get there. I see the searched terms.

True. My online game used to get 1000 uniques a day, but the alexa was no way as low as some web directories that get around 50 a day. I also notice the huge swing in IE to FF traffic as you mentioned.

A nich bidding directory may work well, if you can find the people to generate the sales.
