Actually I don't know much about the subject, but Yahoo! Directory allows for a site listed to cut the crowd and move ahead of the list.

At a mere cost of an additional $50.00 p/month.

Is that the sort of things offered by these bidding directories?

Also in this recent algo update or whatever is going on, was there a count of how many conventional directories were affected in comparision with the number of bidding?

Not unless the word is used in reference to God. In any other context, it's "god".

What are you talking about? At this point, they're all hit. Why did you close it for submissions? And how many would you be getting right now if it weren't closed?

And how many directories are currently on the market as directory owners try to sell them off before the situation worsens even more (or word spreads to potential buyers) before the next Toolbar PR update (which I'm sure won't be great news for many owners)?

Yahoo Directory charges $299 per annum and reviews your site again each year for that fee. Once again - Yahoo has massive trust and authority and I bet they DONT BUY LINKS :)

Where did you get $50 per month = $600 per annum for Yahoo Directory from?

    What are you talking about?
My bidding directory which I don't even want to link to since Google is watching.

At this point, they're all hit.

All? Mine still has some pretty good traffic. Sure, most of it comes from terms like "bidding web directory", but at least Google seems to recognize it for the keywords I've once targetted.

Why did you close it for submissions?

Because God told me to do so in a dream. He also said I should change this page and call it a "review fee", but I didn't listen. ;)

And how many would you be getting right now if it weren't closed?

The last 5 days it was open it made around $20/day, what it would get now ... not sure. Maybe it would be penalized and the answer would be zero.

That's in addition to the $299.00 p/year so the grand total becomes $899.00 p/year.

If u go to the business category there, u can read about it in the directory submit program.

By paying the premium, your listing jumps ahead of all the other listings. I was just wondering if the bidding thing is the same.

I understand your point on trust and not buying links, but I just thought I would reply to the thread with what I know. Again, I could be wrong.

'The idea behind a bidding directory blatantly breaks Google's rules'

I mean the thread says that the concept of bidding directories breaks Google's rules.

I don't know what the bidding concept is for sure, but I'm assuming it's getting your listing ahead of other listings. If that is it, then Yahoo! Directory also uses a similar concept.

For people asking why not put a nofollow to a bidding directory, I'll ask you why should they put nofollow? To tell Google that you're not selling PR? Just that? Come on, we may think Google is an SE god but we still have our free will right? :p

For people asking about how useful some bidding directories are, if a bidding directory gets top 3 ranking in keywords such as online games, won't you think, they are useful. Yes, I don't know any bidding directory that has done that yet but if they do then wouldn't that be useful for your games site? We shouldn't even discount that these directory owners might be buying targetted traffic in form of Adwords, toplists, safelists, forums, myspace, friendster and a whole lot of other ways.

I'm not to sure about how many bidding directories were hit. I just wanted to discuss the fact that I think bidding directories blatantly break Google's rules and opened up their eyes more on targeting directories. The business model/concept behind a bidding directory is asking for Google to do something about the "directory business" because I think it breaks Google's rules, whereas a paid directory is still up in the air if it breaks Google's rules (someone actually mentioned in this thread that Matt Cutts announced a paid directory with a review fee does not break Google's rules).

Another big factor I think is the way these directories are advertised. The owner of these directories buy links on a tremendous amount of other sites to get popular and noticed. Yahoo doesn't do this.
