Is it out dated? do they need a newer console?
I dont really know the full specs but heres what i researched and found.

    PS3
    256 xdr RAM @ 3.2ghz
    256 DDR3 Ram @ 700mhz
    = 512mb

    CPU
    Cell Architechture - 1 Core chip with 8 SPE's/PPE's (8 cores)

GPU - Couldn't find much but i know its equivalent to a dirext X10 graphics card.

Optical storage - Bluray (50gbs duallayer)

So now if we compare it to a high end pc how outdated is it?
    No fan boy wars.

Unlike PC where some of the memory will allocated to the OS, PS3 use its RAM mainly for the games only. So 512MB is sufficient to run games in PS3.

It's not fair to compare PS3 hardware with current PC hardware. As with PC, users are able to upgrade their hardware every months, while for the PS3 users, they just stick with the same hardware since 2006.

But if you compared PS3 with PC hardware in 2006, I can say PS3 is a superior machine.

And Nintendo will released their new game system next year and I'm sure Sony and Microsoft also will release their next generation system shortly thereafter.
