The Google Dance? An explantion?

I was sitting here wondering why my keywords jump from the first page, second result to the second page.

    Could this be why?

Google "test" your position in higher ranks to check the popularity of your website. If this was true they could test:
    • How long they stay on your website.
    • How many pages they view
    • Other stats.
If people come to your website and leave quickly or don't view many pages they know your site isn't of quality and Google moves it back in the ranks.

    Just a thought... Your thoughts.

I think what you've said is possible. This way, google can find out whether the site that gets the ranking position are truly those that deserve it. However, no way to confirm this and like yourself, I'm also wondering whether there is actually a rank checker that monitors on it.

This could explain why some new sites get an initial boost is the SERPs before falling back to where they would normally be..
Google could also monitor if the site gains natural backlinks after being high in the SERPs for a short while.

    Cheers

If your website has been around a while... A lot of it has to do with what data center you landed at. Their can be amazing large swings. Last week our site went from # 4 to # 82 over a few hours time and then settled back to # 6.

It also has a lot to do with what the competition is doing... And from time to time they could be adjusting the algo's.

The "Google Dance" refers to something totally different (and that term is now superfluous).

I do indeed that that's "one of" the factors. To expand on it, I think Google also analyzes when possible how long the visitor stays on the site. With Google Accounts, Google Toolbars, and everything else, they can really do that for a whole lot of users now.

google does that all the time, but it is not the reason you bounce page to page.
that could be the reason why you were #12 and drop to #15.
the "google dance" is when backlinks are updated and your site changes postion.
what your are seeing is your site on different dc servers.each dc server having you at a different position.when it settles down you see your site rank higher then you did before the update.
