    Hi Everyone,

I'm doing some research on a project about the importance of the future of online marketing and wondered if you had any ideas.

First off, How important do you feel it is for a marketer to know about marketing online in the future?

What are some of the things YOU would like to know about it?

do you think this is something marketers WANT to know?

Thanks for any ideas you may have

In my opinion, online marketing would become more and more important in the future. With the development of internet, more people would work online, go shopping online and do more things through the internet. Because of this, there may be fierce competition on online marketing. I wonder how to deal with that fierce competition.

Online marketing is getting more important because people need solutions "now" which the net can provide.
I needed to know how to get in and get a share of this HUGE pie.

    It's important now.

My question: "what's going to be popular next?", but only time can answer.

    I hope not ;-)

Eventually everything will be done online., Imagine having to start from scratch then when there are 1,000,000,000,000,000 websites just in your preferred niche.

It depends on how far into the future you are looking. Right now, and the next months (maybe year), it will be social networks and places (geographical targeting). Think Facebook Places, Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, Booyah, and combine it with mobile devices (like iPhone, iPad and all the other).

How do they help with marketing besides just putting an ad on their sites?

Online marketing is the future IMO. Slowly people move from buying stuff in the real world to online. Hence, we only going to experience more and more growth from online sales.

    There are two big ways:

One way is to own your own places (geographical location), and use it for advertising. Think of it as a regular physical store. Just like what's been happening for a while on role playing games and games like Second Life. You can own space, and have a physical spot "in the real world" but on a social network and a map or something similar.

The other way is better targeting. When you know people are at McDonalds, you also know what other things they might like, and what other things that are close by. For instance, if you're an affiliate of a store just a mile away from that McDonalds, you might be able to send a message about the other store (if you're a friend). Or you send a message about something people like to do after they've been to McDonalds. Maybe buy your eBook, how to stop eating junk food :) I don't know, but something like that.

I agree that the competition will only increase over time, especially since there are still many businesses that haven't transferred to the internet. However, I don't really see any point in speculation about the future of anything, it may end up one way, but it may also end up in a completely different way that anyone imagined. Most important is the ability to adopt to the new technologies and forms of marketing that will show up with time, that way one must not worry too much about competition, since many individuals and businesses have trouble adopting to new trends...

I thought maybe the online marketer would like to know what's around the corner in the marketing world so that they can better prepare themselves for the future. For example: email marketing, by knowing what the government regulations are or where email is headed the marketer would be more prepared. Perhaps a better title would have been "The Future Of Marketing Technologies" I'm not sure. Just wanted to see how important this was for the marketer.

Web marketing has just started becoming one of the most sought after ways to promote all the business collaterals - be it marketing, sales, promotions, etc. It can never die. Saturation can happen anywhere, anytime. That doesn't mean it can't pick up again. Online marketing is here to stay.

Don't understand this. Can you explain it differently?

But we already have geo-targeting without social networks.

My thinking is that people are being blinded by the hype of social networks and letting the real marketing slip by. IMO, social network marketing only works with businesses that already have a social aspect, like entertainment (movies, music, etc).

Online marketing is become more professional, the mom and pop stores have to compete with big business, and have to devise new ways to get on that front page

I think he is just quoting some examples for making us understand the use of internet marketing or the online marketing importance in almost every project and product.

Yes.. Its 200% correct. Here after no one need to go and market door to door. social websites, forums and more and more available. Two ways of marketing. 1. Tele-Marketing 2. Internet Marketing.
