I was checking out the various services and networks I currently use and something just occurred to me. Two years ago or so, Adbrite received like 8 million in funding and has yet to become profitable. Rightmedia needed an injection of funds recently to keep on going. Kontera received a million or so in funding too. None of these companies have become profitable yet. As the Internet continues to mature, how long do you think the investors or angels will continue to fund these companies? While Adbrite, Right Media, and Kontera concepts are interesting, they appear not to make any money, just news. There is a lot of talk for Yahoo to be acquired by Microsoft or merge with Ebay. Do you think under new management they are going to also continue to fund projects which produce no returns? I bring this up because what happens if any of them go out of business and the publishers that support them are left holding the bag? Flycast a several other networks that went belly up in 2001/2002 left the publishers holding the bag. Can this happen again with these new companies? Obviously, if these companies had the necessary revenue to continue without injection of millions of dollars in funding by outside investors. If they were self sufficient, wouldn't they just fund themselves, sell themselves to a bigger company or go public? I do not usually like to play devils advocate, but stranger things have happened. The chances of Valueclick going under is not very likely, nor is 24/7 RealMedia. Then again, 24/7 Real Media has not been profitable since the inflated 2000's. Maybe that is why they pay every 90 days instead of the standard 30? Who knows. Maybe I am just being too overly concerned.
