If the students worked as hard at doing their job right as making molotov cocktails, they might not get fired in the first place.

Well, I hate the French, but in their defence I don't see how there wouldn't be barney with 250,000 of them all fired up. It only takes 1 person to start fires. Not like America hasn't had its fair share of violent protests over the last 40 years.

    Hmmm, let's see...

    Murders per-capita
    #24 United States 0.042802 per 1,000 people
    #40 France 0.0173272 per 1,000 people

    Total Crimes:
    #8 United States 80.0645 per 1,000 people
    #14 France 62.1843 per 1,000 people

What's with the inferiority complex around here lately?!

What gets me is how they do act like Brats over something so small while at the same time hating America for something big. They are expecting more riots tomorrow

    That's really funny.

Yeah, a dispute over your right to job security, that's silly. Much better to get upset over the cost of a tank of gas.

Hell, we're talking kids here. It's not like you want to be tied down to a permanent job until you are 26 anyway. The employers are throwing them a lifeline, telling them to lighten up, live a little, don't be so serious. Careers and job stability, mortgages and responsibility are for grown ups - and that's not arriving on your 21st birthday the way those silly english speaking countries see it. Nooooo, relax, kick back, we're giving you an extra 5 years, mate.

Ah, c'mon. Oxford, England was razed to the ground by students during the 1400's, as I understand it, over...

the price of ale, which had gone up too precipitously.

Twas ever thus. When I was at Berkeley, first, it was anti-nukes, then apartheid...and it was a helluva lot easier to protest than to walk down to the streets of Oakland and do some real work. Meanwhile, the true working class - the nearing 60 janitors who had spent the better part of their lives cleaning up after spoiled rich kids - cleaned up after the bravado performances of these idiots.

Nothing to do with the French, unless you find it convenient. More to do with the nature of young idiocy.

I find it hard to believe that anyone has a right to demand anything from an employer (except his paycheck). If you don’t like your boss, you can quit.

I am an employer that would hate the government telling me I have to keep someone on the payroll even if I don’t want him or her anymore, for whatever reason.

I'm neither employer nor employee but I know that I wouldn't have worked as hard as I did when I was <26 if I thought my boss could sack me with no reason and no opportunity to "raise my game". The instability must be intense.

I think in some instances (such as NZ) it is far too hard to get rid of bad staff but there has be a middle ground.

When I was 21 I did work for a guy (IT industry) who gloated over every sacking and redundancy he was involved in using words like "shafted". Sure it's easy to say you don't have to work for the guy but one of the kids he "shafted" had been unemployed for 3 months. I'd just spent a few days training him up and was impressed by his attitude, skills and promise. His dismissal was akin to a blood sport to this particular boss.

As usual, what on earth does this have to do with the price of tea in China?

What's with the overwhelming need to feel guilty about being American?

And those countries are? (aside from the nutball terroist nations)

I suppose if we had those countries on our side, we'd be just as popular as France too.

I was just letting littledoug know that America is MORE VIOLENT than France.

He (and you) probably didn't realize that.

    So it was just FYI!
