The Four Boxes - Which Ones To Check When Copying Code

    H Folks,

I just joined CJ the other day, so I don't know very much.
I searched but could not find an answer to my question -

What do you do with the 4 check boxes, when you copy the code -
    1- Encrypt link-?
    2- For use in email-?
    3- New browser window-?
    4- Hide tracking code-?

I have been checking yes on #1 and #4.
Is that what I should be doing?
Sorry if the questions are stupid, I am just learning Commission Junction.
    Thanks for any replies.

    Hey Surf Dude

Your question is not stupid. You would also do well to have your affiliate links open in a new window, in my opinion, you have less chances of losing your visitors that way.

    Thanks, kentuckyslone.
So, a user must specifically close the new window, to make it go away.
Would that be called a "stickiness" factor?
And a good general practice to do all the time?

And what about the "use in email" second option?
If checked, does that make you a spammer? Any downside to this? Upside?

Yes, I think it is best to use target="_blank" (open in new window) for any external link. There is a better chance that the visitor will browse through more of your site afterwards. If external links open in the same window they will probably close it or go on to something else.

Makes sense to me - I will do "new window" from now on.

So, might a person conclude that "check ALL FOUR boxes" is the best way to go?

Always? (shamelessly seeking a devil's advocate here)

The more little things I get right in the beginning, the more time I will have to concentrate on finding the best partners.

No, don't check all four if the link is not going into an email... check ONLY the ones you want to use... sometimes you won't be able to encypt a link.. it depends on what you are doing with the campaigns. Some Java scripts won't allow you to encrypt.. ther is no "always" option here...

Also I prefer not to hide the tracking code.. it makes a long garbled link when you do, and I am always suspicious of gargbage looking links when I surf myself.. bu that's my .02 cents...

    Hope this helps...

I agree with that. I prefer using .htaccess redirects instead of the "encrypt link" option
