How the heck can somebody build a url redirection website that looks like crap into a site that gets 1.6 billion hits a month? How did they get that busy? Are they using free techniques or do they simply have a large marketing budget?

I know viral marketing is probably one way but how did they get started? I started my own url redirection website a couple of years back and could barely get anyone to use it.

well, who knows if it's really 1.6 billion hits, As far as I know, the stats aren't publicly available :) Plus, the guy was the first one with that kind of service, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't know much about this and the stats, but if it was the first one, which I think it was, then doesn't it mean that for each person that uses a link, that is an extra link on the web that if gets click, it will create on hit for the site and another one for the external site it redirects to. Now if a few people use that link, then it will quickly burst into thousands of visitors and it will be like a viral effect as people that get redirected probably sees a page first showing their services that they offer before redirecting to the external site.

They were one of the first url shortening sites. I guess that's why.

They were the ones who had the idea. They invented the concept - that is why.

Yeah, the first thing that popped into my head is that they are the original and still the best. Plus the domain name does a great job of getting the point across quickly.
