I was browsing through Archive.org and i came across http://web.archive.org/web/19981202230410/http://www.google.com/. Is this the first Google?
It was called BackRub back in 1997: http://web.archive.org/web/19971210065425/backrub.stanford.edu/backrub.html http://web.archive.org/web/19971210065417/http://backrub.stanford.edu/ BackRub started in Jan 06 http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html but I can;t find any screen dumps of it.

i dont know if it is or not. that does not, look familiar at all.. But then again when Google first came out VERY few people used it. Yahoo was the big one at the time. But also at the time was a lot of experimentation. it seems right before the milenium Lycos, Webcrawler, Altavista, HotBot, and Metacrawler all hit the search scene. Still Yahoo triumphed but many people used the other engines. Google I remember being around, but not popular. At least in the city i was in.
Well you have to give them credit they did make it work out well for themselves. Yahoo just sat back and let them take it all. This is similar to what Kmart did when Wal-Mart was much smaller. They just sat there thinking they were invicible.
That should be a lesson to all of us. Giants in the Internet fields once started out looking like crap. But they kept right at it. They persevered, and evolved. So should your site. Skinny
Never thought the name came from here! amazing, they really thought well before giving it that name. Can u imagine it was left GOOGOL!!! sounds funny
