Ok, I wanted to start this thread to get any "think tanks" who think there may be a way to stop this:http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060213/chester. I've always know that the government and big corps want to control and regulate the net, effectively destroying it in the since that it will no longer be a level playing field among business people, and freedom will be gone. My question is simple. How in the hell do we fight back against these bastards? I don't want to hear from you pie in the sky people(you know who you are) who believe government is good and love to see the net controlled. I want to hear from people who have real ideas. Here are a few of mine. 1. Boycott and refuse to use any corporate service which restricts the flow of freedom and information on the net. 2. If the government or big corps try to restrict or control the existing net, create another net which is without their control. What I mean is, purchase servers and build our own search engines and recreate the net without a way for the government to control it. I really don't know how the net can be regulated, because it is the domain of hackers and other people who will fight against the government at every turn. P2P will continue to exist, and in the digital environment their will always be away to get something without paying, because any type of data can be replicated an infinite number of times.

I clicked the link, and it said February 1st. Thanks for contributing to the thread with good ideas............ You guys are laughing and joking now. You're going to look real dumb when laws are suddenly passed a year or two from now making it impossible to start a online business without having lots of money up front...... We'll see. Just like you have to have at least 100 grand with good credit to start an offline business, we'll see what the future holds. Do you morons think the big corps are going to sit back and keep letting you make thousands per month from your site without trying to restrict it. Dream on.........
I say we make a petition against it! Someone make a page (or better yet, a site) where we can sign (type in our signature) to vote against it.
No! YOU look real dumb while you sit on your lazy ass and complain about EVERYTHING instead of going out and trying to make a living for yourself. If you're waiting for all of these half-baked apocalyptic scenarios to play out before you do anything, you're a fool!
I just clicked on the link and read the entire article. I'm glad someone with intelligence wants to contribute something useful to this discussion. I'm glad to see that the US has a lot of intellectual property rights on the net. This will make it hard for other countries to just waltz in and take over. I also hope that ICANN doesn't fall into the hands of the UN. The UN is corrupt and have been caught doing corrupt things dozens of times. No one who values freedom is going to stand for this crap. When people are used to having free information, as your article stated, they aren't going to take kindly to having it taken away. How in the hell can I make a living if the damn government and big corps take over the f*cking net!!!!!!!!! I can't start an offline business because I don't have 500 grand sitting in the bank, and that is the whole damn point. THE INTERNET IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN MAKE MONEY WITHOUT HAVING TO HAVE A MILLION BUCKS UP FRONT WITH CREDIT. IF THE BIG CORPS AND GOVERNMENT HAVE THEIR WAY, THAT WILL CHANGE! Read the link T0PS3O just posted. It says right there. This isn't a scenario. It is on the horizon. If I sat on my lazy ass all day I wouldn't be in here making posts because I would be broke and I would not have enough money to afford to get on the damn internet because I wouldn't be able to pay my bills!!!!!!!!! Good idea. If anyone wants to do that I'm more than willing to sign.
I think they are too late with this. There's too many of us who just wouldn't participate in their scumbag money game. They cocked up this time. But refusing to pay is one thing - we would be phooked if they just shut the place down and take it behind controlled walls. The internet is due a reconstruction since the HTTP protocol apparently can't handle the demand. IP addresses are scarce as we know, it's a finite number which won't be able to address demand. So chances are that since the underlying foundation needs rebuilding, they will seize their opportunity then.
In order to do this, we'll also have to make our own ISP (Internet Service Provider) company(s). Which will require tons of money and tons of people to work together.
Tesla is right. This is no crazy conspiracy theory, the plans are already drawn up and all that is left for those want this is to find a good excuse that will convince the masses (read: repeat a lame excuse in the controlled media often enough so the woodducks start repeating it) and they will get what they want. Then we'll all be like in China where our Google searches show up a fraction of what is out there and no real truths. If there's money involved, bad people want control. It's a classic scenario. If all this is new to you, you have no right to laugh at Tesla's thread. If you don't care then just move on and don't cry when in a couple of years you can't find fuck all on the net anymore or have to pay tax per bit you download.
Rob... You also mentioned this... Which, in this instance, is not such a clever comment IMO. I can see where you are coming from in terms of Tesla's preferred topic of interest but that's no reason to play this one down as half-baked apocalyptic. Tesla is no fool in my book and if he prefers to create awareness over commercial interest, I respect that.
I don't think it will ever come to that, but if it does I have a good idea. Do you think it would be possible raise money via donations(similar to a non profit organization) in order to start an ISP that is non corporate controlled. It would go something like this. Get a bunch of people(millions) to donate money to the creation of an alternative, non corporate controlled ISP where nothing was taxable and the internet was for the most part free. Do you think It would be possible to start an ISP company that was non profit, at least at first? I think there a lots of people like myself that would make donations for something like that. In the long term it would benefit everyone. Suppose 1 million people donated only 5 bucks each, that would be 5 million bucks to go into the creation of a new ISP which is non corporate controlled which will allow business people in the long run to make much more than they put in. This organization would also continue to act as beacon of freedom in the flow of people who want to get real information via the net which isn't controlled. I agree. But remember the 80/20 principle. If they can get 80 percent of the population(who are usually morons) to go along with it, they will have what they want. But there will always be 20 percent of the population that understands what is happening, and will fight back.
