    Am I reading that right?

How can I test landing pages that way if the display URL has a limit of characters?

Your display URL needs to be the URL where the searcher lands after clicking on your ad.

If you have a redirect script or link of say http://yourlink.com/mytrackinginfo/z12345, but after you visit that page it ends up at http://yoursite.com

you could use yoursite.com as the display url and the other as the destination url

Display URL needs to be only the domain name & extn... it need not be the entire path... If your domain name & extn extends the limit drop a note to adwords support.
