This is great fun. It's like a digital riot, I havnt had this much fun in weeks! (yes I know that's pathetic!) And no, digg won't recover. They have breached their users trust. Reddit is about to get a HUGE wave of new users.
http://www.designprophet.co.uk/?p=20 Yes I am posting my own website, but that's where the story is What do you think about this? A lot of people use DIGG to promote their websites.
I have a video of the chaos. I'll upload it to youtube in a minute when it finishes. It's interesting, especially on digg swarm, to watch the stories come then disappear as 404 on Digg's site. The new stories page was very chaotic, so it didn't capture it as well.
Showing my age here... but Digg acted responsibly. It's not for them to risk their business over illegal content. After Google has cached the page (after only 19 diggs on the copy I found, that's fast!) and they know plenty of others will publicise it anyway. Check out What’s Happening with HD-DVD Stories?
I agree (although I don't completely understand the kerfuffle. Isn't it the same as You Tube removing copywrited content. Are they acting because it was a sponsor, or would they have done the same thing if any companies private content was published.
I agree that Digg acted properly. I really just note how well this exposes the whole groupthink dynamic at Digg and how its a big game of follow the leader. I'm not a fan of Digg (or the other web 2.0 sites that are similar), but I am enjoying how quickly the diggbats turn on the site without even caring about Digg's legal dilemna here. Anyways, here's the video I captured from Digg. It's kinda interesting to see the stories come and go very quickly. Youtube may not have it ready for a few moments. http://www.lorien1973.com/digg-revolt-of-2007/
It's retarded. They deleted the story because it contained some hex code. Digg was stupid for removing it, and the users are being idiots for turning it into such a big deal. I still find it highly amusing, but I could careless about the stupid hd-dvd hex code.
This is the only thing (besides offensive media) that i've ever seen digg try to cover up. all those windows vista cracks? they're still there. anything torrent/riaa/mpaa related? still there. However, when a major cashcow for digg (hddvd's advertising) is offended, they try to cover it up. Users hate that, and crumble the site's reputation permanently. I can't see digg ever becoming as big as they have been. sorry.
Yep. I made that same point. You have windows hacks, Roms, software hacks all over Digg, but they draw the line here? Digg encourages bad behavior and now it comes to bite them in the ass.
Ive never really used digg except to advertise my site lol..I made an account advertised my site, and never gone back since lol... I find this very funny..
Part of me loves this - I've always thought the internet would be the way to new revolutions so everytime something like this happens I smile... In trying so hard to protect copyrights and sensitive infomation that leaks, they really end up just shooting themselves in the foot because stuff like this happens as a result. The other part of me wonders if how this will affect social networking sites or sites like Digg. Are they going to clamp down somehow and start censoring posts in some unthought of way... Digg has pretty much been rendered useless at this point.
