The Digg Effect

The above graph was taken at 10:30PM 3/2/06. As you can see, the Digg came at around 5:00PM and jumped traffic 20 times above normal! The site should finish the day with 25,000 page views, which will be a new record.

For those who don't know what a Digg is, this post should explain things.

    I love getting Dugg! :D

Thanks for the heads up, great blog post. Anyone know of any other sites similar to fark/digg/slashdot except in different niches. I'm searching for pet and music geared sites now, just wondering if anyone knew of some others off-hand

Well, I guess web marketing is my full time job since I don't have a *real job*. However, you comment about no time left for anything else isn't true. I have all the time in the world. One of the reasons we get into this is to buy your freedom back. I don't have to deal with waking up to an alarm clock or fluming in rush hour. The lifestyle offered by the internet is truly great and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

The most important part of the Digg effect in my opinion is backlinks
One of my sites got digged 3 times in a short period of time and because of that it gained a few hundreds backlinks that are still sending traffic myway, I also had a few link exchange requests from some of the "authority" sites in my niche.

Making the front page of digg does WONDERS for your site.

traffic and backlinks that result are insane.

When I made front page, they sent me 13,000 visitors from digg. To this day I still get traffic from the submission. Not to mention all the backlinks and other traffic it is still generating everyday from other pages.

The digg community is a large instant gratification type. Sure, you will see a huge traffic boost but they are a very tech/net savvy group who are not really likely to buy from you or click your ads.

You would never believe how many people use digg feeds. I went from pr0 to pr5 just by being on the front page for a few minutes. My listing got a bit... removed afterwards lol

It would be interesting to see a comparision between digg and slashdot. Awhile ago there was one but the effect was overlapped. You'd really need to take two seperates sites and get one on one front page and one on another...of course both sites would probably end up on both...

Besides digg and slashdot what other sites provide massive traffic boosts?

For my sites, a slashdot has always produced bigger results. This is because of 3 reasons.

1 - Slashdot is a bigger site than Digg
2 - There are less stories on the slashdot front page
3 - Stories on slashdot stay on the front page longer

The other big news site, but not tech related, is fark.com
