The Consequences of Buying/Selling Links

I've heard from many people that Google doesn't allow buying text links on other sites, and they can ban you specifically for that.

So my question is, if you buy/sell a text link, are you doing wrong in Google's eyes? What are the consequences?

Your site wont get banned for purchasing links. The site selling links, however, can get devalued by google, therefore making your link useless.

if the links are no-follow and thus not to gain PageRank there should not be a problem... or so google say.

at fridayatbills we quit buying and selling links not worth the effort or getting devalued over ... turning content quickly on the site seems effective and google bots spider it more often...

google doesn't allow buying or selling links solely for the purpose of passing pagerank or link juice.

you can buy links for the purpose of advertisement. however, those links will need to have rel=nofollow attribute added so that it doesn't pass any pagerank.

If you sold links because of your high PR, would Google lower your PageRank?

I haven't heard yet that a blog or site has been banned because it was selling links. However, if your blog accepts paid posts and sells links, upon the next pagerank update, it will surely get a lower pagerank or even get a zero pagerank. This is the consequence of selling links at your blogs.

In most cases Google won't even notice it unless someone reports you. In my own experience trying to rank high in a competitive niche without doing shady things like buying backlinks or building site satellites is pretty much impossible. Everybody I know is buying / selling backlinks like crazy, Google can't penalize all of us :)

The result of buying good quality links wisely is higher ranking in Google unless you get caught (the chance is higher not to be get caught) then the result varies from discounting those links to penalizing your site

I think people who don't make a link farm selling links generally won't get caught, and if you are discreet.

Although I think the one who buys from a link farm can also be penalized.

Definitely not worth to get links from link farm. I think paying someone for forum signature is a safe method of buying links.

so many people with so many theories. I buy text-links and have had success with them, however, they become costly over time, and when you stop paying the benefit goes away. Other ways, forums, articles, blogs etc.. Stay away from link farms and obvious spammy looking sites. For some keywords there's no other way to rank. Hope this helps!
