There are a ton of partially written incomplete viral marketing guides out there and while they provide useful advice, they don't really provide concrete advice to launching a viral marketing campaign. I wanted to create this thread to share REAL examples of successful viral marketing campaigns. If you have one or any questions please share. I was working for a friend, rapper YouNg, who wanted to get some help marketing his stuff on YouTube. He has quality songs, but they just weren't getting the attention they deserved. So I launched a viral marketing campiagn where I had him create a remix to "I Love College" a very popular rap song and post it on YouTube. I then went to work on marketing it, sharing links with all my friends and using social networks like Facebook and MySpace to share the content with my network. I made it easy for them to share and because it was quality they did, spreading rapidly. (I sent private messages on Facebook and created a group to promote it). It spread fast. I submitted it to many social bookmarking websites and encouraged embedding and commenting. People started to comment on the video and as it spread more people started talking. To date, through sharing the video with my personal network, encouraging sharing and commenting, and spreading it over the web, the video has received over 400,000 views and over 500 comments in less than 4 months and has helped YouNg build up a fan base and attracted tens of thousands of views for his other work. I have fully explained all my tactics in a Ultimate Guide to Viral Marketing post I recently wrote http://www.ambeat.com/2009/06/05/ultimateviralmarketingguide/ If you have any questions I would be happy to share. Also, I really would like if others could share information on viral marketing campaigns they have run as I feel that is the best way to learn. Here is the video I promoted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rL9P32YwNE
I was wondering what if/any startegies people here are using to market on Facebook? Profiles, groups, or pages?
Viral marketing needs some very creative idea. "Allow User Product Modifications" is very important right now because different users have different needs.
@copper12 I didn't do any marketing for Asher Roth, I did marketing for YouNg, a completely different rapper. As you can see, the version I promoted was a REMIX to the original song. Using the popularity of Roth's song was one of the key elements to the campaign's success.
