Does anybody know what the Internet market is like in China. For example there are so many niche websites but mostly for the English speaking people. Do you think it would be worth it to have a website translated to the main Chinese language to reach that audience?
It won't be long before there are more English speaking people in China than in the U.S. Having something in both English and Chinese would definitely be a good idea.

I am a native Chinese speaker who has lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years. From time to time I went back to China for visiting family and relatives in addition to find opportunities doing business internationally. I myself is doing some researched about Internet user's in China. The Internet market in China is totally different with in the U.S. due to culture differences and the acceptance of online shopping amount Chinese Internet users. If your website is trying to sell something you might have hard time to collect money through the online. However, if you are providing contents or services and target the MAJOR corporations (or bilingual speakers who are most likely work for these foreign corporation.) to the Main Lane China (doesn't have to be local Chinese. It can be any foreign company that doing business in China.) there will be great potential of profit, if you can really find yourself a "Big Account". Or, making your website so unique that some Chinese/American companies would like to have a join venture with you. Remember, there are many major and well-known companies built up branches in China, such as Microsoft, Google, Walmart, HomeDepot (not long ago lunch), IKEA, CitiBank...etc. They will all need to have their website done in Chinese in order to serve their local customers and clients. For getting traffic, it will not hurt to have another language on your existing website (if it's not going to cost you a fortune to build one). I am a Chinese writer / translator and I can tell you that I am getting more demands of English-Chinese translations especially for website contents these two years. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm more stats. But of course it depends entirely on your niche. And of course remember that if someone in China searches for a product name in English, then it's relatively safe to assume they can speak English... think about it.
More languages definately will be advantages. I have a website with few languages so that it is easy for my visitor to read about it.
I still couldn't figure out how to monetize Chinese traffic. Not CPA obviously....even their transaction model is kind of unique comparing to the western world. They buy books online and pay cash upon delivery. Which is unimaginable by the most of us who's using paypal and plastic cards.
It depend on your topics . To choose is more important than just hardwork . If you have knowledge of php, it is better . I am from China and I know the market well .
If you know the market well than just tell us what works. "to choose is important"...choose what? I would appreciate if people can be more open when they post here telling the world they know stuff. Let's share with some solid posts else why waste bandwidth.
What about joining an affiliate network based in China? We have one. And, yes, China is now the country with the most internet users at 298 million, more than the US. But you would do well to research the culture and perhaps get a partner over there who could help you decide on the best type of site that would monetize well. Then it's a matter of buying traffic and getting the right ads up. get in touch with our china rep if you have more questions kerendotsatadsmarketdotcom good luck!
With the currency exchange of US$ 1.00 to 6.83 RNB the time of this writing, I don't know if it is worthed to get into a foreign market. You've to work 6.83 times harder to equal one time you've to work in the U.S. My two cents.
