The bidding system for sites

    This is not a complaint.

I think the bidding system needs looking at or updating.
I bid $5 for a site with a auto max bid of $10

Some other member bid $10 and they are now the high bidder at $10.

I would have thought that if someone bids the same amount as my max auto bid them my bid would be the one that is used and the other bidder needs to put in more than my max bid, because I would have already put in a bid of $10 in theory.

Maybe time to upgrade the bidding plugin?

Your max bid means it will automatically enter that bid for you AFTER someone else outbids you. If they bid $10 first, you can't automatically have a bid entered for the same amount. You don't get to "reserve" another bid level. You simply get to say the maximum you're willing to pay. If you want to reserve the $10 level, you should have bid $10 up front.

    They didnt bid $10 first.
I was the first bidder with an openeing bid of $5 and a max bid of $10, so when another person puts in a bid of $10 then surely the system should say there is already a bid of $10 you need to enter $10.01 or something.

So what is the point of the auto bid system?

No. You didn't make a bid of $10. You said $10 was the maximum bid you would allow the system to automatically make on your behalf. Until that bid is actually made, you have no claim over it. Someone else bid it first.

The point of the auto bid system is to cover maximums to auto bid if you're not on the forum. It doesn't reserve price points and keep them away from people who are bidding live. If you choose an auto bid maximum that's too close to your actual bid, chances are very good that it's going to be pointless because someone else will make that bid or a higher one first. It would be more for a bid where you expect a wider range of bidding and you don't want to be left out of the bids just because you're offline for a while.

OK. Thanks for the explanation, just seemed strange but I get what you are saying.
