I personally used to like advertising manager the best which was from openx but they have stopped the plugin now I suppose. Other plugins includes adman2 for automatic placements inside posts, there are a few for sidebar ads too. Personally speaking it is better to edit the template directly if you need the ads in the same positions of the template. And if you need for selling ads then you can check oiopublisher.com . There are a few rotating banner plugins too but the problem is that most ad plugins are not updated nowadays from what I have seen as people prefer to go for template editing instead as it is more trusted and stable method.

OIO Publisher is what i am using. It's not free but you pay a one time fee and get lifetime upgrades. They do have a affiliate program attached so you can promote OIO and earn your money back plus more money.

I use OIO to stickup my own banners, make them rotate with other banners and sell banner ad space. There are a lot more features they have but i don't have a need to use them right now.

Here some links to check out. (I'd suggest registering on there forum and ask Pre-Sales questions)

    Hello,

I've wanted WPTrafficTools to be recognized as the best but it's taking a good while, and because it is commercial it does not get the mass exposure that free plugins do. Let me try to explain what makes WPTrafficTools exceptional.

    With WPTrafficTools we have.

    1) 9 possible ad placement locations including:
    1. Top of the post
    2. Middle of the Post
    3. Bottom of the post
    4. + 6 available widget areas that can accept ads at any given time

    2) The main features of our ad management module are:
    1. Create as many ad templates ad you chose.
    2. Target ads by keywords detected within the postbody or post title content.
    3. Target ads based on keywords detected in the referring url (specific google searches)
    4. Tagret ads to entire categories. (Sub categories will inheret parent category ads)
    5. Target ads to individual posts. (Options to exclude posts)
    6. Target ads only to search engine traffic.

With this we are very flexible in how we present ads. I believe it is the most flexible wordpress ad mnagement plugin out there.

We also have a link masking and link tracking section in WPTT that allows us to keep track of advanced clickthrough statistics. It even separates spider traffic from human traffic to make sure our results are most accurate. We can also do neat tricks such as iframing our content and more, but everything is built to be variable and optional.

Thanks for listening! There's more to be said but that's enough for now!

For me best banner manager would be Adwit Banner Manager, it optimizes all types of ad campaigns.

I agree 100%. You can even sell banners through your site and auto email your buyers statistic reports. Also, when you setup banner ads, you are provided with shortcode or a javascript option. This allows you to embed ads on another domain / website. Very cool. Simon provides great support too.

    "Advertising Management"
Good for header, footer, top of post, above comments, below comments, post title, etc.

    "Ad Squares Widget"
Good for a sidebar widget to put in 8 maximum 125x125 ads.

Both can be found on the Wordpress plugin site.
