banning ips will never stop a hacker, because a real hacker will be using spoof/proxied ips anyway.

installed a firewall like APF (http://www.rfxnetworks.com/apf.php) and install mod_security (http://www.modsecurity.org/).

 

Just wanted to add...If you use several scripts, install modifications (to for example a forum script) keep a simple log of what you have done. It can be a simple text file. Every time you change something, install new version of something, update you changes there. The log should contain:

All installed scripts, including version numbers and date installed/last updated.

If modifications have been installed names of core files changed, line number where the modification has been made in the file and also new files uploaded for the modification.

It takes little time to write the log, but it sure helps when checking if there are newer versions available, if there are malicious files in the system and so on.

Also if you use an outside programmer require them to provide you a logfile of what has been done.
