The best way to secure backlinks?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by NewComputer, Jul 8, 2004.

I was just reviewing my tracked backlinks (using Shawns tool) and I noticed that the 2 (haha, only 2, sheesh) are now GONE! They were posted as comments on other sites. My question is, how do I get backlinks? I know its sounds noobish (I just created a word) but I have no idea. Do I need to contact other websites and ask them for anchortext links to my home page with 'NewComputer.ca" as the text? Will just a link suffice with any information as the text? Are there any good free places to secure backlinks. I thought I understood backlinking, but apparently not as my backlinks are showing nada for www.newcomputer.ca or newcomputer.ca. Thank you in advance.

    You have

    11 for link:www.newcomputer.ca/
    35 for link: www.newcomputer.ca/
    140 for @www.newcomputer.ca/

and you are no 1 for allintext allinanchor and allinurl for newcomputer.ca [which is not unsurprising! Ha] :D

Boy! I don't know where to start. Your apparent lack of understanding on this subject is pretty complete.

    1. You get backlinks like anything else in life by working for them and asking other people to either put up links to your page or exchange links to your page. You can also buy them -- think of it as advertising.

    2. Another method is to write articles and try and get them published on the Internet. They will ususlly include backlinks as part of the author's credits.

    3. Yes you have to contact other webmaster. How else would you possibly think it is done? But you don't want 'NewComputer.ca" as the anchor text. You want your prime keywords as the anchor text. Very few people will search for you using your domain name. Anchor text is used by the SEs to determine the relevancy of a link for a given search term, so it needs to be the most common term that people will search on when they are looking for sites like yours.

    4. Google normally only shows backlinks from pages with a PR4 or higher. So if the pages that linked to you have slipped below PR4 this may explain why your two backlinks have disappeared. But Google seem to be in some state of flux at the moment and a lot of people's links have disappeared. I anticipate that this will probably get corrected on the next update in a week or so.

The is no free lunch when it comes to backlinks. One of the methods is to search on your prime keywords and then go to each site in the top ten or twenty and see if the have a "add URL" page. You can also email the webmasters and suggest exchanging links.

Another way to check for what links the various SEs know about, or have indexed, is to use this tool. http://www.webmasterbrain.com/website-link-popularity-checker-tool--tool4.htm

    I hope this information helps.

Well, you are No 1 for
    computer repair fraser valley
    in google.

Wonder whether your potential customers would use this search term though.

My point is - and I only had a quick glance at the first paragraph of your website ...... but yours seems to be a local "real world" business. You should be targeting local search keywords that people would use - do some research, maybe something like, computer repair richmond, computer repair burnaby ... etc. Local search keywords are easy to achieve top rankings in.

Also your TITLE etc tags are not optimized.

    Neither is your H1 ....

    Nice looking site.

The best way to secure backlinks is perhaps via major directories - DMOZ is a superb place to get links, because of the way the data is shared around multiple websites. Also, other directories offer either multiple listings.pages for the same site submission (Joeant and Gimpsy, for example) and others have very high PR but little competition (ie, BlueFine).

Thanks for the compliment. I am working really hard, and I guess my downfall is that holding a full time job down is not helping me expand my business. When you suggest computer repairs Richmond, would the best idea be to create a computer-repairs-richmond page and then optimize as such?

Can you give a little more insight into my title tags and the H1. I do not get to spend as much time as others do researching the right information, I spend too much time on the wrong information, except when I come here;)

    Thanks again.

I hadn't looked at your page before, but the title and <h> tag problem is immediately obvious.

    1. A title should probably be limited to about 60 characters. Yours is way too long.

    2. A title should start with your prime keyword phrase, not your company name. Think about it this way. The title is the most important on-page element as far as Google is concerned. It should tell them and a visitor what to find on your page or site, but it should also be something that someone will search for. Unless people know you, they are not going to search for Newcomputer.ca. So if you prime keyword is "Fraser Valley computer repair" say so, by making that the first thing in your title.

    2. The same applies to the headings on your page. Put your keywords in them.

Nothing hard or mysterious about that, just common sense. Google wants to return pages that are relevant to the terms searched on. They use titles and heading to determine relevance. So you have to figure out what people are searching on and then tell Google that your page is relevant to that search term by putting that phrase or keyword in your title and headings.

It doesn't take hours of time and learning to figure that out. It is just common sense.

I use keywords in my file names - but perhaps someone else would like to comment.

I just want to share this.

When I was just starting just a year ago, I wrote the webmasters of the top ten websites in Google "Computer Related", I already placed their links into my website. But unfortunately I have not received any single reply from them.

Well known and high PR websites will really just ignore you if your just a new one.

Since I don't have money to buy links, here is what I did.

Join forums like Digital Point, and put my target keyword in my signature.
"You can see my first post here in Digital Point".

Submit article to Article Directories and put my target keyword in my resource box.

Submit to Web Directories. Only to web related categories.

Exchange links to web related sites and put my target keyword on anchor text.

If you look at my website now, It's on the first page of Google with my target keyword and beaten some of my competitors who refused to exchange link with me.

Simple tips but really works. Hope this will help.

One somewhat simple way is to include your link on popular social networking sites. Like put it in Myspace comments. This works for alot of people, but you have to keep doing it, cause the links will eventually go away.
