What is the best way to change an article, without avoid penalty for duplicate content in order to submit it to a number of online directories?

I don't understand why you would get a penalty? wouldn't the article site get a penalty if anything?

I find all the article rewriting software totally crap and they do not give you content anything worth reading.

It is best to devote little more time and re write them yourself! :)

Um, based on my research, Google doesn't really penalize duplicate content across domains. It just filters duplicate content. This means it will choose the one that it thinks is original and will try to filter out all the others from search results. I read this from http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html which is an official Google blog.

By the way, if you want to modify existing content, I find that rewriting them yourself is the best way. One quick way to do it is to rewrite by paragraph. This way, you don't have to move all your ideas across paragraphs
