This has a bit of a learning curve but its the fastest way to get to an enterprise level solution.

    http://www.magentocommerce.com/ very cool stuff.

Magento is one of the most advanced opensource ecommerce solutions. I think it's to bloated for what you need.
You can take a look at prestashop or search google for other open source software.

If you're not a technical person and want to focus on marketing your site you should consider an hosted solution.

There are numerous open cart solutions for your store but it is all going to depend on what you're wanting to accomplish plus the features that you wish for your store. I would recommend Magento, Open Cart, Tomato Cart and so forth if you have programming experience. Otherwise you will need to hire a developer thoroughly experience in developing the shopping carts mentioned to achieve the goals you want for your online business. The alternative would be to choose one of several hosted shopping carts solutons i.e. Interspire, Volusion, BigCommerce, Shopify, etc.

With Magento I found the back end admin very confusing, i paid in the end to get a custom site built which i was walked through to begin with and got to see my back end before they started building the site and i have been overwhelmed with how well it all came together (ive heard plenty of horror stories with new web start ups getting ripped off) If you want to talk through what I went through to get started or anything on dropshipping then get in touch or just go and look at my beautiful site allforme.com.au (its got adult material on there so be careful!!!) :)

Hi Friend, Thats a great idea starting an ecommerce business online, High revenue earning platform. I would like to suggest 3 things for ecommerce as my experience will help you.

    1. If you are planning to buy a ecommerce script, then AJ Shopping Cart Software ,will be the right choice with plenty of user friendly facilities.

    2. If you worry about hosting issue, you can get Zscart - SaaS Ecommerce solution with easy monthly payment option and free trial too. you can make your shop with in five minutes.

    3. If you are looking for free source means, Zeuscart will be right choice. Highly downloaded open source script online.

Opencart is the platform that my site was designed around - it needs a lot of developing though to get working the way you want it and with a lot of additions etc and there's a lot that needs tweaking, anything that says it works straight out of the box means at some point, you'll need help!! :)

just a quick reply to EmailM and Rashida on here - i'm onto you emailM and Rashida! Stop touting your businesses in these forums - this is for people to come together and share experiences and help each other out - not a free for all on advertising. ive just read the forum titled "Want suggestion for a simple site!" and its a very well scripted dialogue between you and your cohorts trying to actively push your companies position - i remember your quote on a site and it was less than favourable! so come on keep it clean and lets all get along without the largely unsubtle "advice" I just went through and read some of your 344 posts and got tired when i realised they were all aimed at bringing in business and not honest down to earth advice. a forum is where people like me come to get information without agenda, not a place to be taken advantage of

i understand that it will need tweaking but for the way that i want it to look and wok work it does any way a lot of the addons haven't been mad so will need addons custom made i was just thinking of using opencart because basics for me to build on are already there

i need addons like choose a band drop down a section on the home page where it says some bands we stock and it will be like featured products which will change every time the page is reloaded so it will randomize it type of thing and a ling on the let that says new arrivals among other features

is it better to get all the addons and extensions in place before the template is created

ow and thank for all your advice its very much appreciated

The first three don't look much like band templates, they look like they'd rather be turned into a technology site or something. I like the fourth one, but it's a bit shiny.

ZenCart - Pretty easy to use, not too bloated, and pretty well known, so plugins are easy to find.

I second that. Use Zen Cart for my website - www.spectglasses.com and couple of others. Easy Admin Options, and Simple User Front.
Have been running the site without problem since almost 18 Months Now.

OsCommerce is vile! It has so many code exploits. My site was hacked through an installation of osCommerce although I've used security add-ons. Besides its templating is very poor. You will spend weeks and weeks before you get it work and look right.

I believe a WordPress with eShop plugin (the one by Mr Rich Pedley) is the best way forward if you're looking for a free webshop. For an additional $30 you can get an affiliate add-on for eShop.
Besides, you save time. Yoy can get a WP/eShop running in a matter of minutes.

Remember that with webshops comes responsibility, so, safety should be one's main priority!
