What do you think is the most under rated Link building tool available – I mean the tool that is extremely powerful but often overlooked. My vote would have to be the telephone – If you get on the phone to someone in a related business sector to yours and explain why they should link to you I find I get a 2 thirds positive response (So if I talk to 30 people I get 20 to link to me). These are one way links, relevant and to pages I want to be on, some times I provide the site with content – this then has my links in, other times I broker link deals on other sites for them in return, you have to give something. Just think about when you go through your emails and see the please link to my site type emails, occasionally you get a genuine gem in there but 90% + are junk, but on the phone you can explain to the person making the decision why he should link to you. To make this work your site must be good quality and of use to people. I think the telephone is the best – by best I mean cost effective, fasted, most productive tool I have for link building. I am sure you have other tools you think are better and I would love to hear about them. I posted this earlier on another forum - but noone wanred to play, but I think their could be a gem ot two hidden out there
for me its Article directories on the internet. Post your articles alongwith your signature and you get backlinks.
For me it really is blog commenting on dofollow blogs..... more importantly, targeting ones that have dofollow CommentLuv (in order to get valuable deep links to your pages) plus ones with dofollow top commenter. My Dofollow Blog Search Engine, DoFollow Diver searches almost 600 HANDPICKED dofollow blogs, and I am always adding more. See, other dofollow lists arent maintained, and other dofollow search engines just copy off of those dofollow lists, not checking the sites for themselves. I painstakingly check all of the sites when i add, and do random checks throughout the search engine. Utilize blog comments and get links, and traffic.... plus deep links from CommentLuv and sitewide links from Top Commenter.
In conjunction with what Breakaway said, you should use this dofollow blog tool to find the pageranks of every page on a dofollow blog so you can get high pagerank backlinks.

There's no magic answer to this. But you should try to mix your strategies and make sure you get backlinks from sites with different PR's (don't just get sites with high Pr's= will look fishy considering you don't have PR) in order to avoid detection from the google bots (if you are doing paid ads like text links/blog posts).
Giving away free CMS templates or full website builders. A little work and no cost or a little cost to buy and no work to give it away. There is huge market for free websites and templates and they are ofter very good when finished. Other people do the work and you get the backlink as they use your tools.
