The best free traffic generation methods

1) article marketing - Good if you are targeting your product, search for thread 1284614 Its a good post about article writing.

2) blogging - Yes this helps a lot and good for almost anything. There is a post that lists a lot of blogs that have dofollow link tags.

3) forums - Join a forum and post your links in the sig. There is a post that has a big list of forums that allow link backs (sigs)

4) social networking - This can be good for some niches. I created a facebook profile for a niche and it brings in some traffic, since its older profile it has gained some popularity. You can try facebook, myspace, ect. PM if you want some ideas of how to go about a facebook profile.

 

These are methods I used for my website, they works pretty well.
1) Using Digg/Reddit, but remember, you're sharing interesting stuff with others, not promoting your own website.
2) Focus on the most important keyword, I mean 1, not some. When your site becomes more popular, target more.
3) Create as many back links (the anchor text is the keyword you're targeting) as you can, anywhere, but don't spam. It is good if these sites have high PageRank but it's not a must.
4) If your website is really useful, tell your friends that and ask them to tell others.
5) Be patient. You will get good traffic but it may take some time. Keep doing what you think helpful.

I've had some luck building feeder pages at Squidoo and Hubpages on my topic - although my results did vary a lot from niche to niche. You also have to be pretty careful at Hubpages to not get your hub flagged as too commercial, which tended to annoy the hell out of me.

 

Yahoo! Answers is another good site to drive free TARGETED traffic.
