I develop all my client stuff with Magento. It is a bit quirky from time to time but its the fastest way to get to an enterprise level solution with a free open source app.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Hi Friend, Thats a great idea starting an ecommerce business online, High revenue earning platform. I would like to suggest 3 things for ecommerce as my experience will help you.

    1. If you are planning to buy a ecommerce script, then AJ Shopping Cart Software ,will be the right choice with plenty of user friendly facilities.

    2. If you worry about hosting issue, you can get Zscart - SaaS Ecommerce solution with easy monthly payment option and free trial too. you can make your shop with in five minutes.

    3. If you are looking for free source means, Zeuscart will be right choice. Highly downloaded open source script online.

Good luck ...Choose one for successful ecommerce business.

Magento or OpenCart, several well known brands operate their sites on these SAAS platforms, especially Magento. If you have the $$$ than you can go for their Enterprise or Professional edition which means you can offer your customers Gift Cards and be in compliance with PCI-DSS.

As you can see there are many free and paid versions of shopping cart software. Take the time and test out a few of the open source ones to see if they'll meet your needs; but keep in mind you'll need to have technical 'know-how' to implement them.
Go with the paid/commercial products if your technical abilities are lacking...

I use OpenCart and occasionally PrestaShop, but that is because I found Magento to be slightly harder to use for a newbie like me. As far as it is now, OpenCart and PrestaShop has served me fine. Importantly, if your platform supports template changing, then that's a great plus I guess as you can literally choose the template you like the best.

Does anyone know which are the main modules of an e-commerce/e-payment solution/app ? I've been asked this a while ago when applying for a job...

Definitely Magento. For non-technicals it might take a while to get used to but in my opinion it's one of the most robust open-source ecommerce solutions out there.

For something a little more watered down and easy to use, OpenCart would be a good option.

Magento! Did a quick look around the internet to see which cart solution was performing well and Magento came up tops (I basically used google trends and alexa to do the comparisons for an objective look) You can check out my analysis here - http://blog.anafore.com/2010/11/18/which-shopping-cart-should-i-use-non-hosted/ (read it if you want to but the conclusion you will get is what I mentioned.. magento magento magento!)

My own experience with Magento is that it is pretty easy to use and very flexible.

Otherwise you might want to try out hosted shopping carts which I also did an analysis of - http://blog.anafore.com/2010/11/18/which-shopping-cart-should-i-use-non-hosted/ Read it if you are interested.

    Hope this helps!
