Yeah, I heard Croatia is up and coming. Very nice and beautiful coastal areas and architecture.
Of course you may have to learn to speak their language a little out of respect or just speak English loud and slow:D..
Croatia was actually featured in Hemispheres magazine..( that mag in the front seat vest on the plane )
just returned from Brasil, funny how they like actors like Schwarzenegger, Deniro, Willis, etc. I watched a flick with them. The funny thing is the film is dubbed in Portuguese so it loses all the essence of their unique accents. Anyway, wonderful and unbelievably helpful people in Brazil when you are looking for something. Like Belize ( Belize's official language is english)....Brasil is very humid on the coastal areas in summer, bugs, but very nice in Minas Gerais which has a climate like western USA.
food is cheap, gas in expensive unless you use their sugar cane juice.
good luck on a spot like the USA.
Oh, btw, my sister went to Australia 3 years ago..she is still there and loves it.

Your right, Americans should stay out of Nicaragua.

I read it too, really sad story.
    • Maybe 'they' hate most Americans down there.

    Why would they hate Americans???

"U.S. support for this Nicaraguan insurgency continued in spite of the fact that impartial observers from well respected international groupings...

...sent to monitor the election and observers from democratic nations such as Canada and the Republic of Ireland concluded that the Nicaraguan general elections of 1984 were completely free and fair. The Reagan administration disputed these results however, despite the fact that the government of the United States never had any observers in Nicaragua at the time.[36][37]

After the U.S. Congress prohibited federal funding of the Contras in 1983, the Reagan administration continued to back the Contras by covertly selling arms to Iran and channeling the proceeds to the Contras (The Iran-Contra Affair).[38] When this scheme was revealed, Reagan admitted that he knew about the Iranian "arms for hostages" dealings but professed ignorance about the proceeds funding the Contras; for this, National Security Council aide Lt. Col. Oliver North took much of the blame. Senator John Kerry's 1988 U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations report on Contra-drug links concluded that "senior U.S. policy makers were not immune to the idea that drug money was a perfect solution to the Contras' funding problems..."

The Reagan administration's support for the Contras continued to stir controversy well into the 1990s. In August 1996, San Jose Mercury News reporter Gary Webb published a series titled Dark Alliance, linking the origins of crack cocaine in California to the contras.[42] Freedom of Information Act inquiries by the National Security Archive and other investigators unearthed a number of documents showing that White House officials, including Oliver North, knew about and supported using money raised via drug trafficking to fund the contras. Sen. John Kerry's report in 1988 led to the same conclusions, however, major media outlets, the Justice Department, and Reagan denied the allegations.[43]
-Wikipedia source (accuracy not currently disputed, why aren't the Neo-Cons rejecting this part of reality?)

They don't hate Americans, just my personal experience based on two months down there living with Nicaraguans and traveling the country.

The Eric Volte thing is horrible, it shows how awful the Nicaraguan courts are, but you can't chalk that up to anti-Americanism because 1) another poor Nicaraguan got locked up without any evidence, too; 2) it's pretty clear the issue is money, not nationality. Nicaraguans are rightfully apt to see corruption everywhere, especially in the for-sale judicial system, and a mob of them were led into a horribly wrong conclusion, largely by a newspaper.

It just bothers me that so many people see anti-Americanism everywhere. You're missing out on a lot if you let that kind of paranoia set in.

If you don't want to go to a country b/c of its horrible legal system, that's one thing. But don't start imagining that everyone there hates you.

Anti-Americanism or not, there just isn't much of anything good to say about Nicaragua.

Their government abuses their people and keeps them mired in poverty. It's a complete disaster.

There are so many better places to be -- right in that region.

i think that any american of a religiously fanatical nature, and there are some on this forum, should relocate to iran or israel where they would find like-minded people. lots of brainwashing, indoctrination, and public executions or massacres of non-believers. sounds good eh! i bet bush has built his retirement retreat already.

People like you should live in Iran. But I bet you don't think terrorists are bad.

You think anyone with religious convictions somehow brings you harm.

I'm an Atheist, but I don't have anything against religion or religious people.

It's people who force their views on other people that are the problem.

I don't see Debunked wandering the streets and stoning people to death for violating the strictures of his religion.

judetheobscure, you are one confused little monkey!

Me thinks you are confused.. There are no "American Religious Fanatics"... At least I have yet to see one...

I guess it depends on what you really define as "fanatical nature"...

Amazing how in the same breath of stupidity where American and fanatical are mentioned, so too is Bush...

Ah yee of little intelligence... I feel sorry for people like you. What on earth will you complain about when Bush is gone.. Sometimes I feel as though Bush has been our president for 200+ years, or the entirety of our existence as a country...

Then perhaps you should just read the entire thread instead of posting useless one liners every 60 seconds to run up your post count...;)

Not coming from someone who wants Israel destroyed at all. I am not against any particular race, religion, country or anything. I just don't like blind, extremist patriotic Americans.

Note: I have Jew pingpong partners that I play and meet with regularly.

Friggin' Turkey just blocked YouTube again because someone offended blind extremist patriotic Turks.

Can you even imagine that happening in America? Us blocking YouTube because someone insulted George Bush?

We don't even block YouTube when they post videos promoting the murder of American citizens.

And this had been such a nice thread about fantasy get-aways.

well, to put it back on track, after Nicaragua, I'd say Mexico, favorite country to be in #2, I'm sure that wouldn't require much defense...the only problem is choosing a place, it's so amazing and freaking big.

I've also heard wonderful things about Thailand, an obvious choice, but it's a good combination of natural beauty, infrastructure, relative security, and low price--I think those are the things people are looking for.

The current government does not represent my point of view about freedom of speech at all. I have written about my ashame of the current Turkish government's censorships on internet in another thread like an hour ago. Plus, I don't like blind extremist patriotic Turks either. Actually, I hate them.

I think we should focus on the places we do want to move to (or at least would consider).
