The best country for an American to relocate to

What is the best country to live in -- other than America?

    This country should:
    • Have a good climate. Not too cold; not too hot.
    • Have a stable, but small, government. Not too fascist, not too anarchistic. No religious governments, please.
    • Not tax income made overseas. That's pretty important for web publishers.
    • Have good access to quality medical care. That's pretty important for old web publishers.
    • Have good access to shopping. That's pretty important for married web publishers.
    • Have reasonable real estate prices. Some very shabby countries have outrageous prices for reasonable decent houses.
    • Have reasonable prices for goods. Basic goods are very expensive in some countries due to transportation costs, and very expensive in other countries due to crippling tarrifs.
    What do you think?

What other criteria should we be considering?

What countries should we be considering?

That sounds like where I live! I even have my 2 storey, 4 bed house on gorgeous 1.5 acres of land ina semi-rural area all close to everything you need.

I am right here is the pretty much the best safest location in Australia!

Ah, but Australia taxes overseas income, making it far less financially attractive.

Only if you declare it as income. I declare it as business income which makes it exempt. All my income comes from O/Seas and have not paid one cent in tax on it.

Ah, but then don't you have to pay taxes when you take money out of the business? And possibly even pay taxes on money you leave in the business?

yes for the first and no for the second question. However, what you use for personal reasons and what you use for business reasons makes a big difference on what you declare when you withdraw money from the business. For the second part, I believe you will pay tax on any amount the business has in abank account that draws interest. Otherwise the amount remains exempt.

    Heh. Belize is fairly close:
    • Climate is a bit too hot.
    • Small, stable government that doesn't mess around much with religion.
    • No tax on overseas income.
    • Not too far from good medical care -- in Houston.
    • No good shopping. The wife is not happy.
    • Real-estate prices are just a bit above what we pay in Colorado.
    • Basic goods and services are expensive, due both to transportation costs and tarriffs.
Overall, Belize ranks pretty well -- but I want to see what is better. :)

Ah, but a religious government is a serious no-no. The UAE still has functioning Islamic courts.

The wife escaped from Islam, she's not ever going to be willing to go back.

She's pretty happy to be alive, free, and not in a forced marriage to a second cousin.

I like it, but the wife says it's too hot, has almost no shopping, and it covered in mosquitos.

She contacted malaria as a child while vacationing in Egypt and she's pretty significantly intolerant of the little blood suckers.

Of course, when she looks at the taxes she pays every year in the U.S., she's also pretty unhappy about those blood suckers! :D
