The benefits of hiring a professional SEO firm

I have been working on my site for a very long time now and am finally making some money from it. Rather than throw this money at a new iPhone, I am considering reinvesting it to hire a local SEO firm to help me improve my web site and increase my income even more.

My question for the group is whether or not hiring a professional SEO firm is worth it for a very small site such as mine (www.musicedmagic.com)? I am only bringing in around $5 a day right now through adsense ads.

Yes, hiring a local or even national outfit can benefit you, it's all in your expectations and the skill set of the SEO firm.

Do you plan on continually updating and adding content to your site, or is it pretty much built out in your eyes.

At this point, I wouldn't hire anyone for a "pet project". Its nice to have a little side income and personally, I wouldn't hire an SEO for your site. If anything, I'd hire content writers to do a little writing for you. You should be publishing an article a day at minimum. 2-3 pieces would be excellent. Also, purchase a few links from TLA or PPP. Get links from other music websites and forums where you don't have to pay. Keep doing that and you'll raise your revenue from the site up tremendously.

Just as Voasi said, maybe a good content writer is better for now.

The choice to hire a professional SEO depends on the size of your site and how much of a marketing budget you have. For a small site it is probably better to do it yourself. Save some money and possibly invest it in some PR. If you have a large site and a decent marketing budget then you could consider hiring a professional SEO.

For this amount of revenue it isn't worth it at this stage. Save your cash and learn SEO yourself. SEO really isn't that difficult if you follow the advice from the right people.

Whether or not you should hire a “Professional SEO Firm” for your website shouldn’t be based on how big or small your website and revenue is at this point, rather it should be based on where you want to see the site a year down the line.

Having visited your site, I have to say at this point it looks like an MFA site (especially the home page). If this is true, then you are better off doing the SEO work yourself.

What you do need at this point is a good looking and SEO optimized template, hire a good designer/coder to make a custom one for yourself and maybe hire some one to submit your website to various directories and social bookmarking websites.

As the founder of a "Professional SEO Firm" I'm certainly biased, but if all you have is a few hundred dollars, hire someone to generate new content for you and read up here to learn SEO yourself.

MFA = Made For Adsense i.e. site which are made for only one purpose, to make money from Adsense. Usually these sites have little unique content (which isn't the case with your site) and are filled with Adsense ads, which is the case with your site. Home page is a page which should be used for sending traffic to the internal pages of your site, not to external pages i.e. ads or other links.

Thanks to everyone for their input on this. I guess I hadn't thought about simply hiring freelancers. If anyone has any recommendations for freelancing sites or forums please feel free to post them.

I have an appointment on Thursday to talk to a local SEO guy. I may go to it anyway just to pick his brain and see what he says, but based on all of your recommendations I will probably not go through with it right now.

Any ideas on freelancing sites would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean freelancing sites or forums? You are looking for a freelancer to do this stuff or you want to learn it?

No one somewhat serious SEO firm will not work with your music website. Period.

I already know a lot about writing and freelancing. I have been writing articles for my musicedmagic site for almost two years as well as doing contracted writing for another related web site (suite101.com). My problem is that I don't have as much time to do keyword research and write new articles on a regular basis these days due to other obligations.

Based on the suggestions earlier in this thread I would like to know the names of some good reputable sites I could go to to find people to hire to freelance for me. I know I could go do a Google search for it, but I would rather have some personal recommendations from other DP members.
