the age of a website matters for google?

    hi,

I have a half an year website and i was wondering if the age matters so much because some of my friend tell me that a website must have at least one year to reach #1 on google; other agree that this is taken into consideration but isn't so important.

    thx

Age does help in your rankings on Google, but you don't have to be over a year old to be number 1 on Google. Whoever told you that made it up.

time does play a big factor in serps, the longer the site exists the more important it looks in googles eyes

Most definitely. Age is one of Google's ranking criteria. Spammers always use and throw domains away...so the likelihood of a new website being a cheapo spammy site is one factor that Google takes into account.

it is important, a good history makes you a good site in googles eyes. The older the better.

Site age seems to matter, but there is some thought that link age may be a bigger factor. Older, well-established links may be better than newer ones, given comparable link qualities (niche, PR, etc).

I could make a site tomorrow to rank #1 for "hgiuwroauaweiuasdf", so your friend is certainly not right. To rank #1 for a more competitive term will obviously take longer, but a set "one year" is just made up.

Which one do you trust more ?
    * A company that you know for more than 5 years
    * Or a company that is new on the market
This is the answer.Of course new sites can rank better , age is not a must but it helps and is important.

The age of a website is highly valued...

The older the website is the more authority it has for Google...

The age of how long that your site has already indexed in Google count, it's one of the factors that help in your rankings on Google. The other important factor is Quality Related Backlinks. :)

Domain age doesn't weigh that much in search engines. It counts but ranking is not all about it! :)

If it matters it probably only matters much in competitive niches. On a related topic, the sandbox, Matt Cutts said there is something in the algorithm that could have a result that looks like a sandboxing effect if you are in certain niches, probably the niches/industries that draw the most spam.

Yes, The age of the site matters. But what matters more (in my opinion only) is that age of the backlinks to your site.

It's not really required to rank #1 but it's quite helpful if you managed to get some SE's trust and authority dude ;)
