The A-Z guide to getting web traffic

I'd like to get a discussion going around this article written by Shawn Campbell:
    http://www.sitepronews.com/archives/2006/apr/12prt.html

I have a concern around point U: Writing articles. So say I have a website about web programming. My natural inclination is to write articles for my site alone. But should I write an article and submit it to an article directory? Does anyone actually go to those?

write 2 copies of the article, one the full, detailed version that gets placed onto your site, then a summary of the full, detailed one with a link to the full article that you can submit to article directories.

I have had some success with article submission, both in increasing my page ranking and on driving traffic to my site.

I do agree with just-4-teens about submitting a modified article to the article directories to avoid duplicate content penalties.

Articles rulz, and in such places as programing it is peace a cake - write code samples to get in to high quality sites for free and get links back to you.

Or write for general article directories, but yes, you need to keep in mind dupe content aspect.

Does it works - hell, yes ;)

What about point Z: write new content every 2-3 days

I've been adding content daily. Should I bother?

Writing new content every 2-3 days is a minimum requirement. Writing/adding fresh content every day is necessary for serious sites. People will always come around for the old stuff, as they discover you through search engines. But, people keep coming back for the new stuff. You need to make your site a habit for people.

A psychologist recently said it takes 21 daily repetitions to create a habit -- that means writing an article a day is going to have a better chance of getting someong into the habit of returning than writing an article every few days.

how on earth can a person write 10 articles per day? They must either be plaigerised, or pure fluff

If you write regularly and have a thorough understanding of the subjects you are writing about, I think that writing 10 articles in a day is a possibility.

I will say, however, that I am not one of those people who can do that. :)

That being said, article "rewriting" software does indeed exist, though I have never (and probably will never) use it.

Any guidelines for minimum word count? When I wrote for devshed, articles were minimum 1500 words. I can't imagine writing 10 of those per day, no matter how much I know

Around 300 words is fine. You could write a few of these a day, but it is the submitting that takes time.

If I may join in the conversation - can anyone suggest the best places to submit articles to?

Around 300 or more words should be fine.

If you write articles about your sites topic then you should be able to write them alright as your sites topic should be something that you know well.

I've had good results with article submission - not only do they create one-way backlinks to your site when they're posted in the directories, but they can also create backlinks when other Webmasters pick them up and publish them on their sites. In addition, the SEs crawl the directories regularly, and can follow the links to find and index your site.

If you plan on submitting a large number of articles, on a regular basis, you may want to look at Article Marketer - they provide a submission service that allows you to submit as many articles as you want for a flat fee (I paid $80.00 for a one year subscription). If you only plan on submitting a few articles, just do a search for "article directories", and you should come up with a nice list. :)

Content is king. Daily content will keep your visitors coming for more, along with spiders recrawling your website more frequently.

Yeah, Daily content is king but without visitors then there will be no need of having content.

So content and visitors are very improtant. If you have content then make sure you have visitors to see your content.

Well if you write big articles (over 500 words) you can split them up into seperate pages. This way a 1000 word article becomes 5 pages of content for your site, at the bottom of each page you have a simple prev/next link and that's it.

I wait until I'm in the mood for writing and then write 15-30 articles of varying length... that way I can just update my site every day or two for the next month without having to worry about writing more stuff.

If you split a 1000 word article up into 5 pages, then you probably won't be able to submit it to quite a few directories as 200 words per page is not much.

You should be spliting it up into about 2 pages or 3 at the most.

What free directories do people here recommend for submissions?
once I start to make a little $ from adsense, I'll move to paid directory submission as suggested

I was refering to what I do on some of my own sites. So far I haven't been submitting to article sites... I might though. I don't know how much traffic it would bring and I'm sure the links wouldn't be woth the effort.

I see much more value in taking that time and energy and writing content for myself and doing the link building by other means. This way I have more good content and hopefully the links will come naturally. :)

As for submitting to article depots, I think it would be better to submit a "summary" of the real article.
