I'm not sure I fully understand here, I was under the impression if I only had 2 Google Ads (Ie. the 480 Banner) showing it would show the most cost per click ones from what I've read over the past few days. This doesn't seem to be happening, unless I need to wait for Google to settle with the right adds for the new box I've put there. I used to have 2 large rectangles above the fold NEXT to each other - yes quite 'spammy' perhaps, but the page was chocker with free content. After removing the 2 large rectangles, mainly because I've never really liked the idea and replacing it with the 480 Banner, click-thru hasn't really dropped much 'cos I put images above, but the average cost per click is now half of what it used to be with the 2 rectangles. This sounds very unusual to me. Does anyone have an explenation? Thanks, Pete
Pete, How long have you been running this new format? I would suggest trying it for some time and then compare your stats. Only a few days of numbers wouldn't be a good trial because Adsense goes up and down so much on it's own. Google doesn't necessarily pick the highest paying ads, instead they choose the most revelant ads for your page. I'm guessing you could have less revelant put higher paying ads showing up in your second ad block.
i Got simple explanation for it. See when u had single banner the Total Impression of ads was normal and u were getting good click thru rate. As u have put the 2 banners on same page. the total impression doubled making ur effective ctr half and hence the lowering of the click thru income. Simple. Put 1 full size banner instead of 2 460 banners. Will make u earn the same as previously.
Thanks for that - it makes sense actually. This will be interesting. I'll run the ads for longer and compare. It was displaying ads from two topics, one directly related to my site, the second topic indirectly related but I imagine these particular ads would fetch a deal more then the directly related ones, so perhaps having the 2 blocks and 8 adverts would be more in my favour. It's just not that nice. If this is the case then I may be better off using enough ads to display the direct and indirect adverts, perhaps 4 ads as this seems to display 3 direct and 1 indirect - I'm assuming the indirect would be the biggest CPC ad. Either one large rectangle or the leaderboard... as using the banner will just display 2 ads relating to the main topic of the site which pay far less then the indrect ads which do fetch clicks aswell. Ah, it's all good fun eh. I'll start my tests and run each ad for a week @ 200 uniques/day. Thanks for that mate, it makes total sense to me now. Pete
Ah Adams.... I feel such a putz. I think you're right. Excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall for being slow today. Pete
Ok, that's right. But I'm earning less aren't I. Since I now only display 1 Ad box instead of 2, then the full page now has half the CTR, right? 'Cos with 2 Ad boxes it was double. This can only half my earnings, surely? Damnit, I'm frying my brain. It does look a hell of a lot neater then having 2 full large rectangles next to each other, though. ..But I'm seriously considering putting them back like they were. Say for figures sake with the 2 large rectangles the page had a CTR of 50%, that's 5 people clicking every 10 visitors. Now If I only have 1 ad box with a CTR of 25%, that's only 2.5 clicks per 10 visitors. Ummmmm... perhaps I'll make my page ugly again. I aren't sure. Pete
