Yes, SEO is a must. But you need to consider that it will take for a while when you will see some result from SEO if you are at a competitive niche.

And on the other hand you need to take pace with SEs because they change their criterias continuously. So it may be that you are on the first page on Google one day but next day not.

In my experience you can get rapid traffic by making PPC, using good article marketing and buying backlinks.

PPC might be the fastest way to drive targeted traffic to your site but in the long term I prefer organic traffic.
The organic traffic is converting slightly better and it's free (once you made it in the top3).

 

Social bookmarking does bring a lot of traffic sometimes, but it's CRAP traffic. Doesn't convert very well at all.

Search engine traffic is where the money's at.
