The British could have so easily kept the colonies if they had just been slightly less careless and incompetent. I've been reading Jefferson again and it just stuns me how ridiculously bad British administration of the colonies was.
They probable underestimated the spirit of the people being so used to Commonwealth nations not having an issue still coining the queen.
