Jeez... I've always hated that board... Shawn, couldn't you use some hack so that any post in the introduction board doesn't increase your post count? And can't something be done about those morons that come here and post in 50 threads the same "welcome to DP" crap like most of them do? I just clicked on the "new posts" link and found loads of threads bumped up by some dork with the nickname "Rainbow". And most of those lame posts are just to be able to reach their minimum post count to post in the buy-sell board.
I agree. The intro section is great .......................for intros.I know there's a way to do it so it doesn't come up in new posts and doesn't count towards your post count.I remember doing it on a rather large member forum (150,000 +) and it worked a treat..........................I just can't remember how .
the annoying part is that some people actually bump up threads a year old and they welcome those people who have been here for so long already.
To answer your question WebWriter: A lot of people just come to the Introductions board to post a generic sentence as "Welcome to the forums!" to boost their postcount.
I think that the introduction board shouldn't increase your post count. Then I could still welcome people to this board without feeling guilty about increasing my post count.
Well, that makes it simple . . . disable it Shawn. I agree . . I remember one thread where one member had 90% of their posts in introductions. That's not good. Skinny
Because they post just to be able to reach the minimum post count to either have access to the buy-sell board or to have a sig. I think if there is a requirement of 50 posts to get a sig here they should be quality posts and not just by repeating "welcome to DP" over and over.
I think this is one of the things Shawn has been considering. There are some members that post exclusively in the Intros threads. I guess to spam their sigs.- what a waste of time.
I disagree- established Members should be encouraged to welcome new members. I really appreciated the warm welcome that I received from members when I first joined. It says alot about the community. I also try to welcome new members whenever possible--am I considered "lame" for doing that? I've been able to network with webmasters on other boards just from posting an introduction. My suggestion: New members must post something more than "hello". This will give other members something to comment on instead of just "Welcome to DP".
Although I would do a happy dance if that board was just taken away, I know many people here just love to welcome other people... so I am not saying to take it out, just to not let it increase your post count.
Welcome to DP fryman On a more serious note I don't think those posts should "count" either. I've had people welcome me a year after I joined...it's obvious they were just running up their post count to get into one of the forums that requires a certain # of posts.
Are posts in the general chat counted as well? and posts like "not another thread", "read the TOS", ... When I first joined DP I really hated the comments from so called established members. I came here to ask questions as a newbie and that's what a forum is meant for. Those who know everything are here to answer questions, right? I never posted in the intro forum, general chat, buy and sell but I don't see the point in limiting posts in these threads for members with a certain number of posts. Acutally this is what encourages irrelevant comments. I read yesterday the famous amitpatel thread and I was shocked that he has 1000+ posts. The number of posts is not a measure of what you are able to add to the forum. sorry amit, the thread was entertaining but you give a bad impression to DP with that number of posts and that kind of questions.
NikkiBlue, Why would stopping the posts in the Intro thread adding to post count stop established members from posting there? If they are established they have no need to up their count and are popping in there occasionally because they are feeling friendly.
General chat and introduction boards, those 2 should not increase your post count. I totally agree that the ridiculous chat between Nintendo and Amipatel was a waste of time... and then he makes a thread about how proud he is because he reached 1,000 posts... Anyway... hope the Master of the cave considers this.
I never said that. What I said, was that established members should be "encouraged". I am really responding more to this statement : and the dislike for the introductions forum.
I agree, they shouldn't count towards post count. Neither should stuff in the general chat IMO. Only webmaster related stuff. Many people associate post count with knowledge. I do my best to welcome as many people as I can in the newbie area, not for post count though - just because when I join a new forum it makes me feel good when people acknowledge me.
