There was a time when I didn’t know anything about SEO. I didn’t know that the word seo exists and I thought that you can pay Google to be number one. Yes, I was stupid. After one conversation with a friend of mine I decided to use Google and find some information about search engine ranking system. Remember, I didn’t know any cool words like SEO, SEM etc so my search began with “online marketingâ€, “internet marketing†and words similar to those. Some of the results were good, some were really bad. The day when I found good sites with good information came after a couple of long days of research. I found sites like DP, v7n, seomoz, seochat, seobook etc. Rand’s (SEOmoz) bookmarks helped a lot because now I have so many good resources that are available to everyone. Most of the things I have learned came from digital point forums and v7n forums. These forums are really great and I will always have a link for them. Seo, business and marketing subforums are great places for every new kid in seo. So what do I know now? It was almost a year since I first got interested in seo so the amount of knowledge is pretty big but knowledge in theory isn’t worth that much. To test my knowledge I decided to create a small challenge for myself, I have to rank well for a competitive keyword. January 7th was the day when I first started my marketing blog challenge. The challenge is simple; I have to rank well for a keyword “marketing blogâ€. I got really good response to my first post about the challenge and David Meerman Scott wrote about it at his homepage. Thanks David. Another David also helped me, it was David Temple. He gave me a backlink from his homepage and I can’t thank him enough. To be precise, David Meerman Scott and I were “fighting†at Google SERPs since his website was way ahead of mine. I was nowhere, not even close to top 1000. There were days when I wanted to give up on everything and give my domain to someone, now I’m glad that I haven’t done somehting insane like that. Week 6 of challenge was the best, I got into top 1000. My blog was at position 744. Day or two after, I was at positon 380 and couple of days later I was at position 192. I was really happy but I got a little worried because competition was websites older than mine and with a lot of backlinks. When checking my position at February 19th I noticed that my blog got near top 100 at Google and I couldn’t believe it. Two days after that, I was at the positon 75 and I got really excited because I got into top 100 which was my goal in the first place. Today, I was checking the SERPs and you know what? I found my blog at position number 16! I have to admit that right now I’m in love with Google more then ever. I want to thank everybody who helped and to those of you who will help me during the next phase, getting into top 10. Any backlink is really welcome so be good and help me out a bit.
