TFT Monitor - Widescreen or Normal - Help Me

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by inman, Jan 31, 2007.

I am planning to buy a 19" or 20" TFT monitor as I am not very comfortable with my present 17" CRT monitor. Now the issue is should I go for a Widescreen monitor.

My primary usage of monitor will be movies. Yes, I watch a lot of movie on PC that too DVDRips. Nowadays most DVDRips are widescreen so it in not going to be an issue in widescreen monitors. But what about those full screen dvdrips? In normal monitors they play full screen. But in widescreen ones, will they be playing inside a rectangular black box or something?

Secondly, I am an avid FIFA 2007 player. How will these games actually look in widescreen monitors? I mean will they stretch to fit the screen or again does the black box come into play?

And is there any special specificational value I must look into? I mean something like Refresh Rate or anything of that sort which has a threshold value.

Please help me guys. I really want to change this CRT.

    Just saw this.

In my opinion it depends on if your card supports widescreen output formats or not. If not, you'll either be waisting space to either side of the monitor, or have a distorted picture. Worse, your widescreen movies will play leterboxed above and below -and- be distorted out width-wise.

If your video card does support wide screen format, go for it. Videos made in 4:3 aspect ratio played on full screen on a wide screen monitor will likely leave some black to either side of the central video, just like wide screen videos played full screen on a 4:3 aspect screen will have black bars across the top and bottom.

Of course there is the option of upgrading your video card most of the time I guess.

I presently have a GeForce 4 MX 128 MB card. Does anyone know if it supports widescreen output? What are the actual widescreen resolutions for Windows?

I hope GeForce 4 MX gives Widescreen output too.

Depends on how much money you want to spend.
If you want a good and cheap one.
Buy the benq 20 inch wide screen TFT.. about 300 dollars I think :)

$300 for a 20 inch widescreen is affordable. Any more recommendations, pals?

Also I would like to have a chat with a Widescreen TFT user to clarify some of my doubts in real time. If you are one, please PM me your messenger id.
