Hello, sorry for the noob question, but i want to buy a bunch of advertisment on websites similiar to mine and I am wondering whether I should aim for text links or banners.. do search engines treat the two differently when it comes to backlinks to increase my PR?

    thanks guys!

I'm sure they are treated the same way.
If the price isn't a problem for you then you'd better to by banners to drive more traffic.

text links tend to get more clicks (assuming they're placed appropriately) than banner ads. which is why adsense was so successful...

as far as for SEO benefits, my guess is that they're the same when it comes to passing link popularity. however, for link text, my guess would be text links would be superior even to banner links with alt text.

Thanks guys, I was concerned because there are many posts on dp saying to make your text links look like

    Joe's Super Website,
    rather then
Click Here to go to Joe's Super Website

The posts said that this is viewed more favorably by search engines, so I was worried that images, seeing as there is no text at all, would be viewed similar to the "Click Here" style of text link and therefore not provide the same benefits for the keywords Joes & Super & Website

    any thoughts on this??

I also think text links get more clicks, for average not internet savvy users they seem less like ad, just proposition to visit a site. While banners attracts attention but rarely intent to click on them

    banner ads pass PR, yes.

the only way the "Joe's Super Website" example will help is if you're trying to rank for "Joe's Super Website." if there's nothing specific you're trying to rank for, "click me" is fine.

you can have text along with images.

    <a href="http://www.site.com><img src="http://site.com/banner.jpg" alt="Joe's Super Website"></a>
    Code (markup):

Depends on your goal if it is too get traffic or traffic and rankings. Text links are better for rankings, for many reasons but mainly for anchor text. You want your links to have the main keywords you want to rank for in them. Vary it slightly don't kill the same exact keyword over and over.

type in click here in google you will see the adobe download page is number one but doesn't have the words click here anywhere on the site, it is due to all the links it has with those words.

Same thing with the funny miserable failure example Google that you will see what I am talking about.

text links tend to be better for traffic as well. because of banner blindness, and all that.

Do images and text work the same as links? I mean... what is the "anchor text" for an image?

the alt text functions as the anchor text. some argue it may not be as valuable, but it does help.

adsense can use images or text. they use images when images are working better. yet most ads are always text. I think that gives some indication that text ads work rather well for getting users to click.

I would rather have textlinks SEO wise. I think that ALT text on banners don't give as much weight as a proper anchor text from a text link.

Why do you think Adobe ranks #1 for the search term "click here" on Google? The words don't even appear on the page! This is because of the anchor text high authority (based on PR) sites give to them - "Don't have flash? click here!"
