Text Link Ads a bad idea?

    As title.

They pay well but I don't want google penalties. I don't see anything that would make google think that I was using it (there is nothing in my source code, etc, that would demonstrate that) but is there a way they can tell?

    Halp!

I won't put them up until I get a definite answer. The money sounds great (filled 8 signups at $xx a pop for a friggin' single page link!) BUT its not worth the google penalty.

Why would Google penalize you for doing text-link ads?

I use another link selling service without issue. But, I do manual maintenance. There's no code or anything for them in my pages.

    There are two keys:

    1. No link code (although PHP code without comments and such renders as HTML, so no real issues).

    2. They don't link to your Web site in the open (behind closed doors for users only).
