Testing the value of improving your directory

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the value of adding improvements to a directory. However, there have not been many concrete facts presented. I decided to test this.

I had the deeplink mod installed on a relatively unknown directory. The cost of this was $100.

After installation, submission prices remained the same. Submitters could continue to submit at the old prices or pay extra for deep links. If a submitter wanted deep links, they had to pay $10 extra.

After a month of testing, I found that 46% of all submitters chose to pay extra for the deep links.

The directory gets an average of 75 submissions per month. So, that's an extra $340 per month or over $4,000 per year.

Obviously, a better marketed directory would benefit more.

    IMHO, a good ROI.

Deep link mod is great for directory owners. I have bought many listing with this option.

    But my question is:

How many of those listing(detail page) is even cached from major search engines.

So, is it worth for your customers?

I visited many directories including the most popular ones and guess what? my detail page in is not even cache after months of being listed in such directories.

What's benefit for the advertiser? Directory owners should think about this because there is no point in buying deep links if we don't get anything in return.

Well i agree thats why i myself would rather just have an0n add it ...

Though im starting to get sick and tired of hearing about everyone whining
like little girls over a few dollars...

Its ridiculas cause its the ones that cant sell a link that are doing all the crying....

Perfect example would be today... I had 5 different folks that added thier link to a BRAND NEW! directory ( Add URL Here :p )and it paid itself off within a few short hours..

If you cant or dont know how to promote please dont make it sound like its the deep links fault cause of prices
because its not the price...... its YOUR inabuility to make the tool work itself ;)

    thx

Does any one have statistic for your directory? This information is very useful for submitters and adds respect and quality for your directory.

I think it would be nice to have a mod to show this info and have it available at your submit page or homepage.

I definitely agree. I myself much prefer deep link options. If a directory has deep links, no image validation, and some indication it will be promoted, it can count on my submissions. From the other side of the coin, having deep link options definitely makes sense for directory owners for that very reason.

Thanks jeff for making the calculations easy :) Deep links option is certainly going to be mandatory part of a directory.

You can perform a simple search in Google and see if the pages are getting indexed.
