Terrible New feature on Google!! Very bad for small business!

Now most of us had expereinced the "Web History" feature on Google. The one where if you are signed in then google can server you with personal results.

How many of you now remain signed out when searching Google?

Now the new feature on Google launched sometime yesterday is the "Web History" for all users NOT signed in.

You now have to go to the "Web History" at the top right of the page and then click "Disable customisations based on search activity."

The reason I found this was because I was just checking some serps results for a keyword I was in 11th for and then today I found myself in 1st!!!

I thought that cant be right and sure enough I disabled the new web history feature and I was back where I expected.

Now some of you may be thinking "well thats great your in 1st now for some customers" Wrong!

The simple fact is that my keyword has many competitors on much bigger sites. This new feature will lend itself to the bigger sites regardless of the niche, that means all the keyphrases you rank for as a small business will likely be taken over with big branded sites that get lots of traffic.

Lets say I visit twitter on a regular basis then I do a search for cheap flights on Google, it is more likely now that Google will presume I want to see results on that key phrase from twitter first before anything else. errrr NO thanks. idiots.

Stop trying to presume things for me, I am more than capable of bookmarking a site if I like it thank you very much!!

Now to the unknowing public they have no idea whats going on, and that can cause a huge catastrophe in 2010 for small business as not only do they need to work on SEO but now even harder on branding. Creating an even bigger chicken and egg situation. The whole idea of the internet is it gives small business a chance, if you have a niche and are good at it you can be seen. This adds another nightmare layer for them.

For years big companies that have no idea about niche's get the business anyway and do a terrible job why feed the monster?

We all know the best products are never the ones to hit the shelves, its the ones that market their crap product the best that get seen. Thats why back in teh day all the techies could craete great websites/software etc... but had no clue how to market or in some cases talk to people :)

The internet offered them a way of doing that and now Google is trying to change that again and give it back to the big companies. If this is your plan Google then Shame on you! and if not then how many Google employees does it take to work this stuff out? Come on! help the people that helped you exist in the first place. The techies and small businesses that were on the internet way back before the big companies came into exploit it.

    Anyone have anything to add?

Google has always been great at returning the most relevant search results for a particular search term. This is why most internet users stick with Google.

If this changes, folk will soon get wise and switch to a Search Engine that does deliver meaningful results.

That said, I'm sure that Google would soon see the error of its ways and revert to just returning the most relevant results for a given term.

Simply put, Lets say you are in 8th place for "widget service" and then all of a sudden a bunch of big companies that sell that "widget service" rank 1st, 2nd 3rd for "widget service" as a result of this new change, you have no way to beat them unless those customers now find you stuck in 11th place and Google says your site is what the customer is looking for in future search reasults.

So initially smaller sites will be stuffed further down the SERPS making it harder to be found, to then we used in "Web History" only for return visitors!

I have to disagree, my page that was in 1st place does not deserve to be there, it has very little useful information on there. And with "web history" disabled It is back in 11th.

This was already mentioned by Google on their blog. I'd have to find it but they know about that. I'd have to find the link for exactly what they had to say but it was a non-issue.
