Template/Theme Designers: Where Do you Get Your Photos?

    Hey guys,

I know that if you plan on selling templates or themes you have to be very careful that you don't get yourself in a legal mess by using an image that is copyrighted.

So where do you go to get photos that allow you to do this?

Do you pay for them or are there free sites that have stock photos that you can use in commercial applications and allow you to distribute them multiple times?

    Thanks

    Skinny

ANY image that comes as a clipart image, for any program, is legal to use in anything you want. You can buy disks with thousands of images on them that you can use. Or if you want to buy images that people have created before, check out these sites:

Well legally, you aren't allowed to take those photos and commercial sell them massively (such as template resellers), even if they are from a royally free stock site.

You either need to take them yourself or get special permission. If it is just a one time unique sale, I am sure that they won't care enough to check.

I get mine from istockpoto.com and buy a license to use it once.
I have one project that involves me selling the templates that incorporated the images and needed to buy an extended license at $75 per image. This allows me unlimited digital distribution of each image.

Another site fairly new is Phototricity.com . Its more marker friendly and allows you to sell templates containing the images. Just can sell the images on their own. No extra fees for this.

    Thanks,

    Dino

    Are you insane?

Most clipart comes with an extra fee if you intend to use it for business uses. And practically no clipart can ever be used as part of a logo identity.

morguefile.com does not state anything about templates in their terms of use, so you can use their images for templates, besides they're also free.

I was looking sxc.hu and it too states that you need special permission to use it in templates.

I've contacted an owner of a photo about it so we will see.

But yea, I didn't realize that if you are mass selling something you are gonna need to pay pretty big for this stuff.

Good thing I found out sooner rather than later.

    Thanks guys.

I found out that Fotolia.com has the cheapest electronic resale license and some very nice pictures so I'm using them now.

    Hi Skinny,

I was wondering where you found that info. I can't seem to locate it.

    EDIT: found it

    Thanks,

You still can't buy stock photos and resell them massively like templatemonster does. You need to take those pictures yourself.

This is very true. You still can buy photos and sell them say included in a template, etc if you buy an extended license. Many of these sites will charge between $20-$100 to do that.

That's why you have to read the terms of use before doing anything because you can find yourself in a real mess.
