Did you run ps while your script was running? not after it was finished?
Why not just print the whole ssh session here, that we can exactly see what is going on with all output and your source etc.?
Talking is fine but facts would be more helpful.

If you are root the process must be visible with ps, otherwise I would take into account that your machine has been compromised and has a rootkit or similar on it. Possibly it can also be caused by SELinux (mis)configuration, but I am not sure about that.

I ran ps while the script was running.. the script should be okay even if there is no while loop. It's supposed to wait to read and write at least one message before exiting.

I think I am not the root, and it's a VDS not a dedicated server, is it the problem? Maybe I should use a dedicated server instead?

    Thanks!

There could be a socket limit or restriction. I would ask them what technology you got with your package (XEN, VMware, linux vserver, ...). But your script should return some errors then. Have you checked all return values of the involved PHP functions and activated all possible error output in cli php.ini?

I remember it was a $191/year package and there is a "Powered by Sphera" image:

They do not allow binding to ports on the servers..

Thanks for all your help, especially norbert. I have learnt a lot from you and know how to do it with a dedicated server :)
