As said above, And I would add that you may place you site in good website directories and in social boomarking sites. Unique content in your website is a very good way to get better in search results.
Apart from all this, time is also a main factor. As domain grows older, it starts gaining importance in search results. My new domains don't perform so well like my old domains.
